Settling the score

Seville hunting Ajayi revenge in Poland Diamond League meet

JAMAICA’S Oblique Seville and Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi are set to clash in the men’s 100m on the second day of the Wanda Diamond League meeting, the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia, Poland.

The race will give Seville another opportunity to end Ajayi’s dominance over him this season, with the Nigerian having beaten the Jamaican at the Prefontaine Classic and the London Diamond League meeting. Ajayi will be competing for the first time since finishing third in the men’s 100m at the Commonwealth Games.

The Silesia meeting is the penultimate regular-season Diamond League meeting before Thursday’s meeting in Zurich, which will be the last event before the Diamond League final in September.

Sixteen Jamaicans are set to compete on the second day following Commonwealth Games champion Romaine Beckford’s second-place finish in the men’s high jump on the opening day.

The men’s 100m will be contested over two rounds, a semi-final and final. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who won the Commonwealth Games gold medal, is also down to compete along with a second Jamaican, Ackeem Blake, and Americans Ronnie Baker, Kenneth Bednarek, Trayvon Bromell and Christian Coleman.

The Clayton twins, Tina and Tia, as well as Brianna Lyston, are set to compete in the women’s 100m during which they will face Olympic Games champion Julien Alfred along with Americans Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.

National champion Stacey Ann Williams and Nickisha Pryce will contest the women’s 400m where they will face world leader Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic, Aaliyah Butler of the United States, Norway’s record holder Henriette Jaeger, Lieke Klaver of the Netherlands, and former world champion Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain.

A trio of Jamaicans — Danielle Williams, Ackera Nugent and Megan Simmonds — will line up in the 100m hurdles. They will face former world record holder Kendra Harrison, Alaysha Johnson, and Rayniah Jones of the United States, as well as Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska.

Orlando Bennett, who has already qualified for the Diamond League final and was fourth in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Friday, will contest the men’s 110m hurdles. He will face a number of athletes who also competed in Lausanne.

World leader Ja’Kobe Tharpe, who finished at the back of the field in Lausanne after hitting a hurdle, will hope to make amends while Jamal Britt, who won in Lausanne, will be looking to finish first again.

Rajindra Campbell will compete in the men’s shot put, which is not part of the Diamond League schedule, against a quality field that includes world leader Leonardo Fabbri of Italy and Americans Joe Kovacs, Jordan Geist and Roger Steen.

Lamara Distin is down for the women’s high jump where she will face Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh; Australians Nicola Olyslagers and Eleanor Patterson; and Serbia’s Angelina Topic, all of whom have cleared 2.00m this season.

National champion Ralford Mullings and Olympic Games gold medallist Roje Stona are listed for the men’s discus throw during which world leader and Commonwealth Games champion Matthew Denny of Australia will lead the field.

Steven Richter of Germany, Mykolas Alekna of Lithuania, and Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia are also listed.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Ackelia Smith is set for the women’s triple jump where she faces world leader Thea LaFond of Dominica; Cubans Davisleydi Velazco, Leyanis Perez-Hernandez and Liadagamis Povea; as well as Saly Sarr of Senegal.

On opening day Beckford cleared 2.29m in the men’s high jump to finish second behind Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi, who won with 2.31m. American JuVaughn Harrison was third with 2.26m.

Beckford, who is third in the Diamond League standings and is expected to qualify for the lucrative final in September, used all three attempts to clear 2.26m and 2.29m before failing at 2.31m.

Nia Robinson, who failed to record a legal mark at the Commonwealth Games, was ninth in the women’s long jump with 6.29m (0.1m/s) after two fouls.

American Alyssa Jones won with a dramatic final-round jump of 6.98m (1.5m/s) to overtake Portugal’s Agate de Sousa, who had also jumped 6.98m (1.0m/s) in the second round. Jones won on a better second jump.

Monae Nichols of the United States was third with 6.95m (0.1m/s).

In a non-Diamond League event, Danniel Thomas-Dodd was eighth with 18.16m as American Chase Jackson won with a season’s best 20.92m. Jackson also broke her own meeting record of 20.38m, set four years ago.

Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands was second with 20.20m and Commonwealth Games champion Sarah Mitton of Canada was third with 19.34m.
