The growing call for a stronger political Opposition in Jamaica is understandable. A healthy democracy requires effective scrutiny, accountability, and a credible alternative to the governing party. However, the public conversation should not stop at whether the Opposition is strong enough. We should also be asking a more fundamental question: Why are we not demanding better governance?

The concerns facing Jamaicans cannot be resolved merely by strengthening one political side against another. Citizens are troubled by the cost of living, inadequate public services, corruption, political patronage, and the slow pace of justice and development. These issues require more than partisan arguments. They demand competent leadership, transparency, accountability, and policies that place the public interest above political convenience.

The concerns surrounding the Jamaica Labour Party Administration make this question even more urgent. How can citizens have confidence in a Government when some of its ministers appear to be challenging or attacking the very commission established to promote integrity in public life?

What message does this send about accountability? Independent oversight bodies cannot be treated as legitimate only when their findings are favourable. Ministers should not undermine the institution or create the impression that public officials consider themselves above scrutiny.

There is also the troubling issue of a prime minister who, according to public reports, has remained uncertified for years under the country’s integrity framework. Whether the explanation is administrative, legal, or procedural, the public deserves clarity. Citizens should not be expected to accept prolonged uncertainty from the highest office in the land while ordinary people are expected to comply with the rules.

A stronger Opposition is valuable only if it offers more than resistance. It must present credible alternatives, demonstrate integrity, and show that it is prepared to govern differently. The Opposition should, therefore, be challenged to explain not only what is wrong with the Government, but also what it would do to strengthen accountability, protect independent institutions, and improve the lives of ordinary Jamaicans.

The national debate should, therefore, move beyond which party is stronger. The real question is: Do we have leaders who are governing with competence, honesty, and a genuine commitment to the Jamaican people?
