ST JAMES, Jamaica — Motorists using the Spring Mount corridor in St James are experiencing improved access following temporary road works to widen a section of the roadway that had been affected by erosion and landslides.

The section of road, located near a gully, had been facing significant challenges as ongoing erosion caused instability along the roadside. Following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, the damage worsened, forcing the roadway to operate under single-lane traffic conditions. Heavy-duty trucks were also advised against using the route.

However, Councillor Uvel Graham of the Jamaica Labour Party’s Spring Mount Division said a temporary solution has now been implemented to improve mobility in the area.

“We had done some temporary work because we were undergoing another landslide,” he told Observer Online. “We got some help from the National Works Agency (NWA) to recut the banking and reshaped the road temporarily so trucks can come into the area.”

The affected section previously experienced a landslide that also damaged a nearby house, leaving the structure compromised and at risk of eventually collapsing into the ravine below.
