Ultra Lounge is turning up the energy this Sunday, August 30, as legendary Jamaican sound system Stone Love joins the weekly Big People Sundays experience, bringing more than five decades of musical legacy to the Kingston venue.
The event gets underway at 9 pm, with Stone Love DJs Duane Powell and DJ Quan set to take patrons on a musical journey spanning generations, with selections expected to include music from the 1970s to the 1990s.
For Ribbiz co-founder Brian Chung, Stone Love’s appearance is a natural fit for an event designed to give patrons a quality Sunday experience while celebrating the music and entertainment that Jamaicans know and love.
“Big People Sundays is about creating a space where people can come out, enjoy themselves, and experience great entertainment in a setting that feels elevated but still authentically Jamaican. Stone Love brings that perfect combination of history, energy and musical versatility, and we’re excited to have them join us this Sunday,” said Chung.
For Stone Love, the appearance is an opportunity to bring its signature energy to a new setting while delivering the quality of entertainment that has kept the sound relevant for 54 years.
“We’re going to go there and please the people and make sure they enjoy themselves. Stone Love is 54 years old, so we have the experience to deliver,” Stone Love’s Duane Powell said.
Patrons can expect a full-energy juggling session from both DJs, with the sound promising a diverse musical selection designed to appeal to multiple generations.
Stone Love’s ability to connect with audiences across generations has been central to its longevity. According to Powell, its continued relevance comes down to its approach to music selection and its ability to curate an experience rather than simply play records.
“We’re sound selectors who put music together and deliver it to the people. We keep the music clean — that’s what makes us different from some other sounds. We don’t play random music. We’re like a radio station in the streets,” he said.
The appearance also comes as Stone Love continues to work on new projects, with the sound currently developing new rhythms and other productions.
As Stone Love celebrates more than five decades of influencing Jamaica’s sound system culture its presence at Ribbiz underscores the enduring appeal of the sound and its ability to bring generations together through music.
With Duane Powell and DJ Quan behind the controls, Big People Sundays featuring Stone Love takes place Sunday, August 30, at 9 pm at Ribbiz Ultra Lounge.
“Just come out and enjoy yourself and come experience the world-famous Stone Love,” Powell added.
