KINGSTON, Jamaica — Red Stripe is taking its responsible drinking message beyond the bottle and onto the road, using a recent vehicle-check activation to remind motorists that making safer choices starts before they begin their journey.

The company hosted its Drink & Live Responsibly Guh Easy Pit Stop at MegaMart last week, offering motorists free vehicle checks conducted by technicians from Toyota Jamaica, KIA and Louis Industrial Garage (LIG).

The initiative combined practical vehicle maintenance advice with Red Stripe’s broader Drink & Live Responsibly campaign, which encourages motorists to plan ahead and make responsible decisions when alcohol is involved.

For the motorists who stopped by, the pit stop provided an opportunity to identify potential vehicle issues while receiving reminders about basic checks that could help prevent breakdowns and improve safety on the road.

According to the automotive technicians, motorists do not need to be mechanics to identify some of the warning signs that their vehicles may need attention.

Five things to check before driving:

— Check your tyres: Drivers should check tyre pressure, uneven wear, cracks and visible damage, while ensuring there is sufficient tread. The spare tyre should also be inspected. Poor tyre pressure or worn tread can affect handling and braking, particularly on wet roads.

— Check your oil and other fluids: Engine oil, coolant and brake fluid all play critical roles in keeping a vehicle operating properly. Motorists should check fluid levels regularly and pay attention to leaks or warning lights.

Sanjae Brown, senior apprentice at Toyota Jamaica, urged drivers not to overlook minor problems.

“Leaving a small problem can turn into a very expensive repair,” Brown said. “You can go from having low oil to no engine, so it is important to check your oil and keep up with your servicing.”

Brown also encouraged motorists to pay attention to unusual sounds, smells or changes in vehicle performance.

— Test your lights: Headlights, brake lights, hazard lights and indicators should be checked before setting off. Working lights improve visibility and help other road users anticipate a driver’s movements, particularly at night or in poor weather.

— Pay attention to your brakes: Squealing, grinding, vibrations, a soft brake pedal or difficulty stopping can all indicate that a vehicle’s brakes require attention.

“Do not wait until the brakes fail before you take action,” Brown advised. “If you notice a change in how the vehicle is stopping, get it checked.”

Regular servicing can also help identify worn components before they become major safety concerns.

— Check yourself before you drive: A road-ready vehicle is only part of the equation. Drivers should adjust their mirrors and seats, buckle their seat belts and make sure they are alert and fit to drive. And if alcohol has been consumed, the message from Red Stripe is clear: do not drive. Motorists should instead arrange a designated driver, taxi, ride service or another safe way home.

Daika Mitchell, communications manager at Red Stripe, emphasised that responsible decisions should begin before a motorist gets behind the wheel.

“Responsible choices happen before you get on the road,” Mitchell said. “Checking your vehicle, wearing your seat belt and planning how you will get home are all part of making safer decisions for yourself and the people around you.”

Through the Guh Easy Pit Stop, Red Stripe is reinforcing the idea that responsible road behaviour involves more than simply getting from one destination to another. Preparing the vehicle, preparing yourself and having a plan for getting home can all contribute to a safer journey.
