Vybz Kartel signs Shenequa
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dancehall heavyweight Vybz Kartel has signed rising singer and songwriter Shenequa as the first female artiste to join his GreedyLion/Vybz Kartel Muzik label.
In a release, Shenequa’s public relations team said the signing marks a major milestone for the artiste, who is making her presence felt in the Dancehall space, while Kartel has hinted at possible collaborations between the two.
“Shenequa is entering a new chapter. With the backing, visibility and creative energy, the team and I will be taking her career to another level, so stay tuned,” Kartel said.
He also confirmed that Shenequa is officially signed to the label and that collaborations are in the making.
Shenequa is currently promoting her latest single, “My Show”, which is accompanied by a new visual showcasing her sound and personality.
“It’s an amazing feeling to be signed by one of the world’s greats. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity, and it’s only up from here,” she said.
The artiste said music is a form of self-expression and described her approach to creating as an effort to produce her best work.
“Music, to me, is expressing how you feel on a beat. It’s never wrong or right. It’s an art, so just create your masterpiece and do it beautifully,” she said.
Her growing catalogue includes “My Show” and “Emotionally Scarred”. Shenequa says she is determined to develop her sound and challenge perceptions about the potential of female Reggae and Dancehall artistes.
“I aim to change the perception that female Reggae/Dancehall artistes are limited to a certain level of success in the music industry. And if there was ever any truth to that perception, we will change it. With God, all things are possible,” she said.
Shenequa said her work ethic is guided by a quote she learnt in high school: “Whatever your hands find to do, do it with all your might.”
She added that she applies the principle to her music, striving to improve with each song she writes or records.
With the backing of Kartel and the possibility of future collaborations, Shenequa is positioning herself for a wider audience as she begins what she describes as a new chapter in her career.
