KINGSTON, Jamaica — Rising dancehall artiste Jay-A has spent years learning from dancehall royalty. Now, armed with hard-earned lessons, international experience and a new EP loaded with purpose, the Miami-based Jamaican artiste is stepping forward to claim his own spotlight.

Born Tarik Morris, Jay-A is preparing to release Quick7, a project whose title captures both his spiritual outlook and the urgency driving this stage of his career.

“The ‘Quick’ represents the urgency. It means I’m ready right now,” he explained.

The number seven, meanwhile, is deeply personal.

“Seven is my favourite number because I believe it describes me as a person,” Jay-A said. “It often symbolises completeness, perfection and divine fulfilment. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh.”

For Jay-A, the number also represents wisdom, intuition, deep thinking, learning and spiritual growth—qualities he believes are reflected throughout his music.

“Seven describes me and my music,” he said.

Quick7 brings together a formidable production team that includes Justus, Spongmusic, iamwav and Starzplus. Jay-A also takes a seat behind the boards, adding producer to his growing list of creative roles.

That hands-on approach is fitting for an artiste whose journey has carried him through several corners of Jamaica and into some of dancehall’s most respected circles.

Raised initially in Montego Bay before moving to St Elizabeth and later Kingston, Jay-A was surrounded by music from an early age. His father, entertainer Peter St Patrick, provided the first spark, inspiring his son to follow him into the business.

Jay-A would eventually become part of the Gullyside movement alongside Mavado, gaining a front-row education in the mechanics of dancehall stardom. He also developed a close brotherly relationship with Dexta Daps, whom he regards as both family and teacher.

“It’s always an amazing learning experience and a pleasure working with the family,” Jay-A said. “Trust me, Dexta is one of the best to work with. Dem man deh a teacher.”

Jay-A teamed up with Dexta Daps to collaborate on an inspirational tour-de-force of a song called ‘Ambition’ that is set to power the ‘Quick7‘ EP.

Jay-A added: “Big up my brother always—1DappaNation, 1Nato Operations.”

Even though it was the Gullyside connection which helped place Jay-A within a powerful dancehall lineage, his résumé proves that he is building an identity of his own.

His breakthrough single, Pain, featuring Mavado and Dexta Daps, has amassed more than 15 million views on Vevo. The collaboration showcased his ability to blend gritty storytelling, memorable melodies and raw emotion into music capable of travelling far beyond Jamaica’s shores.

Now based in Miami, Jay-A is positioning himself as a bridge between authentic Jamaican dancehall and the wider international market. His catalogue moves comfortably between high-energy anthems and reflective records, giving listeners both rhythm and substance.

His versatility has also attracted an impressive roster of collaborators. In addition to the producers featured on Quick7, Jay-A has worked with Chimney Records, Good Good Productions, Darshan Records and Bassick Records.

But as anticipation builds around the new EP, so too have questions about an apparent rift involving Jay-A and producer Sponge.

Jay-A insists that the disagreement should not be mistaken for a wider fracture between Sponge and the Gullyside movement.

“Gullyside and Sponge never fall out. Gully never fall—forever stand tall,” he declared.

His own relationship with Sponge, however, has clearly soured.

“A Sponge alone fall out; mi nah medz him,” Jay-A said, without revealing the details behind the dispute.

He instead offered a pointed observation that landed somewhere between a life lesson and a lyrical warning: “Your ego can be your worst enemy just because you listen to it like a best friend.”

It is the kind of statement that leaves plenty unsaid—and is almost guaranteed to keep dancehall fans talking.

Jay-A, however, appears more interested in movement than drama. His upcoming itinerary includes Gully versus Gaza in London on September 9, followed by a performance in Malta on September 13. More dates are expected to be announced as the Quick7 campaign gathers momentum.

Real, humble, confident and patient are the words Jay-A uses to define himself. They are also the pillars of a career being built steadily rather than recklessly.

With Jamaican authenticity in his voice, international ambition in his sights and a new project shaped by urgency and spiritual purpose, Jay-A is no longer simply standing in the company of stars.

With Quick7, which drops on the portentous date, September 11, he is making it clear that he intends to become one.
