KINGSTON, Jamaica — Oblique Seville won his first Wanda Diamond League men’s 100m title, while Tajay Gayle won his second men’s long jump title in three years, on Friday’s opening day of the two-day Wanda Diamond League Final, the Allianz Memorial Van Damme, at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, Belgium.

Their wins extended Jamaica’s run to 16 straight years that a Jamaican has won at least one Diamond League trophy as three Jamaicans finished in podium positions with Roje Stona finishing third in the men’s discus throw final.

Seville became the fourth Jamaican to win the men’s 100m title, joining Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Ackeem Blake. He recovered from a shaky start to win in 9.90 seconds (0.1m/s), beating Commonwealth Games champion Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon in 9.93 seconds, and Kayinsola Ajayi of Nigeria, who ran 9.97 seconds.

Gayle saved him best for last leaping a season’s best 8.46m (1.4m/s) in the final round to overtake series leader Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece who finished second with 8.40m (0.5m/s). Switzerland’s Simon Ehammer was third with 8.23m (-0.2m/s).

Fellow Jamaican Wayne Pinnock, placed fifth with 7.94m (1.0m/s).

Stona threw 68.86m in the men’s discus behind Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh, the  winner with 71.29m, and Lithuania’s Mykolas Alekna in second with 70.14m.

Ackelia Smith was fourth in the women’s triple jump with 14.29m (-0.2m/s) as Senegal’s Saly Sarr won with 14.96m (0.3m/s), beating two Cubans— Leyanis Perez Hernandez- 14.82m (0.6m/s) and Davisleydi Velasco-14.73m (0.6m/s).

Rushell Clayton was fifth in the women’s 400m hurdles, running 53.85 seconds behind American Anna Cockrell who won with 53.01 seconds, ahead of Emma Zapletalova of Slovakia who placed second in 53.10 seconds, failing to win her last two races of the series after she had won the first five.

Belgium’s Paulien Couckuyt set a national record 53.20 seconds while placing third.

Commonwealth Games champion Romaine Beckford was fifth in the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.21m as Poland’s Mateusz was a surprise winner with 2.28m, beating world leader JuVaughn Harrison of the USA on count-back with Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk taking third with 2.25m.

Orlando Bennett was sixth in the 110m hurdles final in 13.43 seconds (-0.2m/s) as Americans swept the podium places —world record holder Ja’Kobe Tharp won with 13.03 seconds, followed by Jamal Britt (13.09 seconds) and Trey Cunningham with13.22 seconds.

Danniel Thomas-Dodd had one legal throw, (18.44m) to finish sixth in the women’s shot put as Chase Jackson improved on her one-week old American national record with a throw of 21.14m, which also broke her own meeting record (20.09m) set last year, and is also the world lead.

Canada’s Sarah Mitton was second with 20.64m and Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands third with 20.57m.
