JAMAICA Kingsmen head coach Grant Bradburn says his team is taking a disciplined, game-by-game approach as they chase a play-off spot in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and they have a tough assignment against unbeaten Guyana Amazon Warriors at Providence on Friday at 6:00 pm (Jamaica time).

The Kingsmen sit on eight points with four wins from eight games, while Guyana are the team to beat so far — perfect in four matches for their eight points.

Guyana will look to extend their impeccable start and repel any thoughts of revenge from the Kingsmen who they defeated by six wickets earlier in the tournament. The Kingsmen, however, arrive with momentum from back-to-back road wins and a clear play-off objective.

For Bradburn, the number-one target remains clear for the coaching staff. He said the focus is on preparation, planning, and staying level-headed in what has been a debut CPL season for the franchise.

“It seemed we are taking in a lot of confidence from our couple of wins on the road, St Kitts, and particularly the game in Trinidad. Both, you know, tough environments to win, and to take two points away from both of those venues, both of those teams, was really, really pleasing for the boys,” Bradburn said.

“As a group, we’re well aware of what we need to do to put ourselves into contention for play-offs, which is the number-one goal. But we’re just trying to keep our feet on the ground and just take each and every game as it comes, and give our very, very best in terms of our preparation, our planning, and be really smart around our skills that we tune and the lineup that we put forward to contest each and every opposition,” he further said.

Bradburn warned that there are no easy games in the Caribbean, and that strategy will be key at Providence, where the pitch has a good covering of grass.

“There’s no team on the road in the Caribbean that’s easy-beat, and no venue that is the same. So, yeah, we’re really enjoying that challenge of making sure that as a strategic group we’re coming together — captain, coach, and coaches — coming together and really hatching the right plans for the right venues and the right opposition.

“So far, everyone is fit and well and available for selection tomorrow (Friday), all apart from Andre Russell, who we’re monitoring closely, and we’re certainly hoping that he will be back with us before too long. But we’re just about to undertake our final preparation in Guyana, and the pitch looks to have a reasonable amount of grass on and, but a typical Guyanan surface, and so we’re planning and preparing accordingly for, you know, what should be a tough battle tomorrow (Friday) night,” the head coach affirmed.

Bradburn said that the mood in the camp is upbeat despite the challenges.

“But the team is in great spirits. From a coaching point of view, you know, we’re super happy that everyone has just got their head down and working hard, staying connected, you know, through the campaign. And each and every day, we’re just looking to be a little bit better and, you know, really coming together nicely as a team — Jamaica Kingsmen, which is obviously a debut year for us all,” he said.

Bradburn said that leadership has been central to that growth. he pointed to captain Rovman Powell and the continued influence of Andre Russell as key pillars.

“We’re so fortunate to have, you know, a nice mix of youth and the future of Jamaica Kingsman, and also some experience. We’re very, very lucky to have the likes of Rovman Powell leading this group. Rovman just creates a consistent calm, you know, irrespective of what the scoreboard is telling us and whether we’re on the right side of it or not.

“Rovman is cool and calm, and extremely experienced, obviously, in the conditions here in the Caribbean. So, you know, we’re really getting behind him. And even André, you know, though he’s not been playing the last few games, he continues to be a pillar in our team and someone we all look up to. So we’re certainly looking forward to the opportunity for André to be back joining us next week,” Bradburn said.
