Style Observer Gardening (SOG) takes a final walk through the lush garden of Caribbean Financial Action Task Force Principal Advisor Maurene Simms, CD.

Tucked away in upper St Andrew, her botanical haven showcases a stunning array of orchids and other flora that rekindled a passion first rooted in childhood.

Whether nurturing her favoured Phalaenopsis orchids or caring for her anthuriums, bromeliads, Ti plants, and coleuses, Simms finds joy in how each variety brings its own distinct identity to the garden.

“Together, they create layers of texture, colour, and contrast, transforming the space into what feels like a lush tropical sanctuary,” Simms said. “Every plant has its own character and purpose, contributing to a garden that is as visually dynamic as it is peaceful.”

For Simms, the garden represents far more than the physical labour behind it — it is a living reflection of her personal journey. Above all, she takes immense pride in the community that encouraged her, honouring a lifelong passion which remindes her of her first garden plot in St Catherine.

“I realise that gardening has been a constant thread woven through every stage of my life — from the small farming plots of my childhood in rural St Catherine, to the flower beds of Kingston, and now to a garden that continues to evolve and enrich my life,” Simms reflected. “What began as a childhood pastime has grown into a lifelong journey of learning, creativity, discovery, and immense personal satisfaction.”
