THE National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that it has delivered on its promise to substantially complete the $50-million beautification work in Ocho Rios, St Ann, within two weeks.

In a media release on Wednesday, the NWA noted that it had targeted several areas in and around the township for improvements.

These areas included the section of Main Street, between Island Village and Milford Road and the stretch in the vicinity of Fisherman’s Beach.

Manager, communication and customer services at the NWA Stephen Shaw said the substantial completion of the work came about through a strategic decision to have some activities undertaken at nights.

He said given the relative safe environment in Ocho Rios, the decision to undertake the work at night-time was easy.

The night work caused minimal disruptions in traffic and the cooperation of business interests and local residents was also key to the successfully execution of the works.

According to Shaw, with the substantial completion of the works, it is now much safer for both motorists and pedestrians to navigate the targeted sections of the corridors. The work involved the removal of soft spots, the construction of sidewalks and repaving.

Shaw said the only outstanding item under the scope of the works is the road markings and installation of raised pavement markers, which will be done shortly.

He explains that in order to achieve maximum value from the road markings, these are usually done sometime after the paving works are completed.
