Water restrictions tighten for NWC customers as Mona Reservoir falls to 35.9%

Water restrictions tighten for NWC customers as Mona Reservoir falls to 35.9%

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Water Commission (NWC) says customers served by the Mona Water Supply System will see further adjustments in their water supply operations as storage at the facility continues to decline amid persistent dry conditions.

The commission said that, effective Thursday, September 17, water will be supplied between 6:00 am and 4:00 pm daily.

“The reservoir is now at 35.9 per cent of capacity, and the NWC continues to carefully manage the available storage in an effort to maintain supply for as long as possible,” the NWC said.

It noted that the situation at Mona forms part of a wider challenge affecting NWC water supply systems across Jamaica. It said currently, 99 of its 450 water supply systems are being affected by drought conditions, representing approximately 22 per cent of systems nationally.

Customers are being urged to maintain adequate water storage for essential needs and to continue practising conservation.

Customers served by the Mona system include sections of Liguanea, Cross Roads, Mountain View, Old Hope Road, Hope Flats, Papine, Gordon Town, Beverly Hills, Waterloo Road, Half-Way Tree, Vineyard Town, Manley Meadows, Windward Road, South Camp Road, Franklyn Town, New Kingston, downtown Kingston and Harbour View, among other areas.
