LOVING a Jamaican woman can be an experience all its own. She may love deeply, speak her mind, expect you to show up when it matters, and remember things you thought she had forgotten years ago. But beyond the jokes and stereotypes, these relationships require understanding, communication and effort.

For any man hoping to build something lasting with a Jamaican woman, here are seven lessons worth learning.

1) Respect is not optional. You can disagree with her, but disrespecting her is a different matter. How you speak to her during an argument can matter just as much as what the argument is about.

2) She notices effort, not just promises. “Mi love yuh” sounds good, but sometimes love looks like showing up, checking in, helping out and remembering the little things.

3) Don’t underestimate the importance of communication . Silence might feel like peace to you, but leaving issues unaddressed can create a whole new problem. Talk things through before they become ammunition in the next argument.

4) She may be independent, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want partnership. A woman who can handle herself doesn’t necessarily want to do everything herself. Being a strong woman and wanting a supportive man aren’t contradictions.

5) If you say you’ll do something, do it. Women have a long memory when it comes to broken promises. If you say, “Mi soon come,” understand that soon may eventually become evidence against you.

6) Don’t confuse her independence with a lack of need for affection . She may have her own money, career, friends and plans and still want money, reassurance, romance and tenderness from the man she loves.

7) Learn to appreciate the woman beyond what she does for you . She isn’t your cook, cleaner, ATM, therapist or second mother. A healthy relationship is about two people contributing, not one person constantly serving the other.
