INTERIM head coach Rudolph Speid says Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz cannot afford any slip-ups in the upcoming Concacaf Nations League games as they look to put themselves in a strong position for the start of the 2030 Concacaf World Cup Qualifiers.

Jamaica begin their 2026/2027 Nations League A group stage campaign this week at the National Stadium, starting with Guatemala on Friday and Honduras next Monday. They will then travel to El Salvador next Friday before ending action on October 5 away to Honduras.

It will be the national men’s first competitive fixture since the Inter-Confederation Playoffs in March which saw them miss out on this summer’s FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The Reggae Boyz will need to finish top two in their group to advance to the quarter-finals where they will play one of Concacaf’s top four nations, Mexico, USA, Canada or Panama, which were pre-seeded.

Speid says the team is taking the Nations League seriously, knowing the results could have major implications for their route to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Unlike this year when they earned automatic qualification as co-hosts, Mexico, USA and Canada will have to go through the qualifying process this time around.

“At this particular time, if you look on all the teams, we are currently seventh in Concacaf, but we need to be in the top six by the end of the year to prepare for the seedings for the World Cup qualifiers in 2030,” he said.

“So it is important that we do well in this competition because it actually decides if we get a seeded spot in the World Cup Qualifiers for 2030. If we’re not seeded, then we could go against some difficult teams.”

Speid named his 24-man squad last Friday, with the majority set to report to camp today and the others arriving by Tuesday.

A total of 14 players from Jamaica’s World Cup play-off squad in March have been retained, with the remainder made up of under-23 players, debutant centre back Miguel Freckleton and players earning recalls, including striker Javon East and full back Tayvon Gray.

Speid believes the team is strong enough to make a deep run in the competition.

“If you look at the squad, it still boasts a lot of players from March but clearly, at some point, we had to retool, so it’s a balancing act,” he said.

“But we still expect to do well because we know what we have to achieve by the end of the year. It’s a balancing act but a lot of these players are on form, doing extremely well at their club, and we think they can get us over the line.”

Questions have been raised about the absence of several players, including winger Kaheem Parris, who recently made his UEFA Champions League debut for Azerbaijan’s Sabah FK against Manchester United; and Coventry City duo Ethan Pinnock and Ephron Mason-Clarke.

There have also been questions about the number of locally based players in the squad, with only Mount Pleasant FA goalkeeper Shaquan Davis and Cavalier FC defender Christopher Ainsworth selected.

However, Speid says the door remains open to players from across the country and overseas, after scouting more than 70 players ahead of the upcoming four games.

“We’re still on the lookout for talented players, [and] I hope some come to fruition. What is most important for us is for Jamaica to really field a competitive team all the time and give players who deserve it opportunities.”
