THE Youth Football League will open its 2026–27 season with the fifth staging of its Junior Cup Under-11 Competition, expanding regional access to structured, competitive football.

Since launching in 2022 the Junior Cup has welcomed more than 50 school teams from almost every parish, with many returning annually. This year, regional championships will be held in Trelawny, St Catherine, Kingston and St Andrew.

The tournament is open exclusively to primary and preparatory schools. Each team may register between nine and 14 players. Registration is $20,000 per team.

The Junior Cup follows the YFL Champions Cup in which Balmagie Primary defended its title with a 2–1 victory over Emmanuel Christian Academy.

YFL Managing Director Paula Pinnock said the Junior Cup was created to give children regular opportunities to play, compete, and develop in a positive football environment.

“We cannot continue to speak about Jamaica returning to football greatness without investing in the children who will be required to take us there,” Pinnock said. “Talent is not enough. Children need matches, tournaments, qualified coaching, appropriate facilities, and regular opportunities to compete. In countries with highly developed football systems, children begin playing from as early as four years old. They compete almost every weekend throughout the football season and may represent their schools, grass roots teams, academies, and elite development programmes. That consistent exposure builds confidence, discipline, decision-making and football intelligence.”

England’s grass roots network, school competitions, and club academy system demonstrate the impact of sustained development from an early age, allowing children to train and compete regularly.

“Jamaica still has a long way to go but initiatives such as the Junior Cup can help us to close that gap,” Pinnock continued.

The Trelawny championship is particularly meaningful for YFL and its parent organisation, FYI Consultancy Group, which has supported relief and recovery initiatives in the parish, including the Trelawny Hurricane Relief initiative.

“Trelawny has given Jamaica and the world extraordinary talent, including the greatest sprinter of all time, Usain Bolt.

“That reminds us that greatness can emerge from any community, but talent must first be given an opportunity,” Pinnock said. “While communities continue to rebuild we must ensure that children are not left behind academically, emotionally, or in their sporting development. Football provides structure, joy, confidence, and a sense of normalcy. Taking the Junior Cup to Trelawny is our way of saying to those children: ‘We see you, we believe in you, and your development still matters.’ ”

The Trelawny leg is expected to attract schools from western and central Jamaica, with teams competing for places in the All-Island Championship.

The Junior Cup will stage its first St Catherine regional championship at Ferdie Neita Park on October 10. Minister Alando Terrelonge has committed to supporting three Portmore teams, helping to reduce financial barriers and expand participation.

“Sport has the power to shape disciplined, confident and ambitious young people. I am pleased to support the participation of three teams from Portmore in the YFL Junior Cup, and to help ensure that our children are given opportunities to compete, develop their talent and represent their schools and communities with pride. Bringing this competition to St Catherine is an important step in expanding access to quality grass roots football beyond Kingston and St Andrew.”

Pinnock said partnerships with public and private sector stakeholders are essential to expanding the competition. “Our vision has never been to create a tournament that serves only Kingston and St Andrew,” she said. “We want the Junior Cup to reach as many regions as possible. This year, taking the competition to both Trelawny and St Catherine represents meaningful progress towards building a truly national platform.”

YFL views private sector investment in grass roots sport as an investment in Jamaica’s national development. Structured sporting programmes promote discipline, teamwork, resilience, leadership, healthier lifestyles, and stronger communities. YFL has received the endorsement of the Jamaica Football Federation. The Junior Cup also complements the Institute of Sports national primary school football programme by providing an additional pathway for schools and children who cannot be accommodated in a single competition.
