Grenadian-Trinidadian calypso icon Slinger Francisco, more popularly known as Mighty Sparrow, has died at age 91.

He died on Sunday in New York following a brief period of illness, his family has announced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Trinidad and Tobago’s Calypso icon, Slinger Francisco, known to the world as ‘The Mighty Sparrow’. He was 91 years old,” his daughter Karen Francisco said in a statement on Facebook.

“He died peacefully surrounded by family on September 27, 2026, where he succumbed from a brief illness in New York. And although we are extremely saddened by his passing, we are comforted to know that before his transition, he was able to make his election sure by giving his heart to the Most High, Jesus Christ, where he was baptised in the Seventh-day Adventist faith,” she added.

Trinidadian politician Stuart Young paid tribute to the late calypso vocalist.

“Thank you for your amazing contributions, Mighty Sparrow, Slinger Francisco, ORTT, CM, OBE, a true legend and Calypso King of the World. From a young age hearing his iconic music being played in my home and even now no party is complete without a Mighty Sparrow rendition. May you transition in peace king. To the family, friends and millions of fans of this legend I offer my condolences and prayers at this time of loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Young said.

Mighty Sparrow is known for hit songs such as Jean and Dinah, Dan is the Man, Congo Man, Saltfish (Solfish), and Melda (Obeah Wedding).
