An appeal for Palestine
RAFAH, Palestine; Smoke rises from explosions demolishing houses on the Egyptian side of the border town of Rafah as seen from the Palestinian side of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. With dynamite and heavymachinery, Egypt's army has been demolishing homes along its border with the Gaza Strip, after the military orderedresidents out last week to make way for a planned buffer zone meant to stop militants and smugglers. An appeal for Palestine

Dear Editor,

I don’t usually write letters to the newspaper, but I feel I have to say something about Palestine.

Every day we see the pictures and videos coming out of there. People losing their homes, children being killed, and families looking for food and safety. It is hard to watch and then carry on with your day like nothing is happening.

I know international politics is complicated. I know Jamaica has to maintain relationships with different countries. But there must come a time when doing what is right matters more than worrying about who might be upset with us.

Nobody is saying Jamaica can solve the conflict, we are simply asking our Government to speak honestly.

If we believe in human rights, then let us believe in them for Palestinians too. If we believe in international law, then let it apply to everyone. And if we believe in freedom, then we should understand why Palestinians want it.

Jamaica has always had something to say on issues of justice. I hope we don’t lose that part of ourselves.
