The Prince’s Spur crushes rivals by 14 lengths in Typewriter Trophy feature
There is no certainty in racing, so they say — but The Prince’s Spur didn’t get that memo.
The Rohan Crichton-trained seven-year-old American-bred bay gelding turned Sunday’s $1.75-million Typewriter Trophy feature race at Caymanas Park into a one-horse exhibition, winning by a dominant 14 lengths to prove that some things in this sport are certain.
Ridden by Raddesh Roman, The Prince’s Spur quickly assumed the early pace at the off and led the field ahead of Mohanlal (Jaheim Anderson) and Purosangue (Robert Halledeen). He maintained his gallop well down the backstretch before he started to increase his lead at the five-furlong point.
In three strides he kicked away from the field and that was all it took. The contest was over.
Roman hardly moved a muscle — hands down in the saddle as his mount opened up by five, then 10, up to 14 lengths under a common canter to the wire.
The final time for 7 1/2 furlongs was a facile 1:30.1 (23.2 x 45.3 x 1:10.3 x 1:23.2). Cookie Day N Night (Emelio McLean) finished second with Mohanlal (Jaheim Anderson) third in a race that was really about one horse.
Eric Haughton was the pick among the riders with two winners on the nine-race card. His winners were Silent Cat in the second race for trainer Davidan Robinson and Hoofy Dee in the sixth race for trainer Donwell Dawes.
Racing is to continue on Saturday.
