Setback sparks new chapter for Erral Matik on Ras Wires For Real

For Simon Woodward, losing his job after years of dedication was a painful ending. But rather than allow redundancy to dictate what came next, the executive producer, known as Sir Simon D’First, turned the setback into an opportunity to invest in something he believed in — reggae music.

The money he received after being made redundant became seed capital for a new chapter, helping to move Ras Wires from a digital idea into a tangible music project with reggae artiste Erral Matik.

“Being made redundant after years of dedication was painful, but I refused to let that experience define my future. I put that money into building something I believed in with Erral. Ras Wires For Real carries our stories, our setbacks and our determination to keep moving forward. My hope is that people hear it and realise that a setback doesn’t have to be the end of their story,” Woodward said.

That experience is at the heart of Ras Wires For Real, Erral’s upcoming EP, and is captured most directly in Shown The Door, a song inspired by Woodward’s refusal to allow the company he had served to determine his future.

But the project is not only Woodward’s story.

For Erral, the EP represents a turning point of his own. After performing at a concert for residents of the Bristal Home, he was reminded of just how deeply his heart remained rooted in reggae. That realisation gave birth to Erral Move On, while New Business reflects the determination shared by the artiste and Woodward to keep pushing forward despite setbacks they did not choose.

The EP also explores themes beyond struggle and resilience. Queens Behind The Kings pays tribute to the women who support the ambitions of their partners, with particular attention to Julian and Yve, while Ras Wires in Joburg looks towards international performances and the opportunity to explore heritage on a wider stage.

For Erral, who has spent more than 30 years in the music industry, the project is also an opportunity to reveal a side of himself that listeners have yet to experience.

That new chapter is already beginning to take shape with Journey To Zion, the EP’s single, which has been receiving strong airplay in Jamaica and gaining traction in other parts of the Caribbean and the diaspora. The song has also earned praise from listeners and DJs for its authentic reggae vibe, while generating interviews with Suncity and coverage in the Jamaica Observer. An official video is also being planned.

With Ras Wires For Real scheduled for release in November, the team hopes continued radio interviews and promotion will introduce Erral’s music to an even wider audience.

At its core, however, the project is about more than releasing another reggae record. It is about what happens when an ending forces people to reconsider what comes next — and finding the courage to build again. For Woodward and Erral, Ras Wires For Real is that new beginning.
