Six more teams into daCosta second round

Six schools, including former champions Frome Technical and Rusea’s High, confirmed their places in the second round of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition after contrasting results on Friday.

Edwin Allen High, Mile Gully High, Porus High and Morant Bay High also secured passage to the next round, taking the number of qualifiers to 15.

St James High clinched Zone A honours with 16 points after beating Green Pond High 4-0, while Irwin High secured second place with a 0-0 draw against Muschett High. Both teams advanced to the second round.

The other schools to have qualified earlier are Ferncourt High, Brown’s Town High, Munro College, Knox College, Yallahs High, St Mary High, and Titchfield High.

Tariq Maxwell scored a hat-trick to lead Frome Technical to a 4-1 win over Green Island and the Zone B title, ahead of Rusea’s High who edged Knockalva Technical 3-2 in Ramble.

Maxwell scored in the 30th, 39th and 75th minutes, with the second and third goals coming from mistakes by the Green Island goalkeeper as Frome Technical completed their schedule on 16 points — one more than Rusea’s High.

Mile Gully High secured the point they needed to top Zone E with 15 points, after drawing 1-1 with Foga Road High, who were edged into third place by Porus High on goal difference after both finished on 13 points.

Porus High and May Day High also drew 1-1.

In Zone F, Edwin Allen High beat Troy High 3-0 to move to 14 points, second behind early qualifiers Knox College who had finished their schedule on 16 points on Wednesday.

Holmwood Technical, who beat Alston High 7-1, finished a point behind Edwin Allen.

Morant Bay High claimed second place in Zone H without kicking a ball on Friday, after Paul Bogle High’s gallant effort fell just short in their 3-3 draw with Happy Grove High.

Both Morant Bay High and Paul Bogle finished with 11 points, but Morant Bay had a goal difference of plus seven, compared with Paul Bogle’s plus six.
