KC, Excelsior set for mouth-watering Walker Cup semi-final clash

KC, Excelsior set for mouth-watering Walker Cup semi-final clash

Two of the most successful teams in ISSA Walker Cup history, Kingston College (KC) and Excelsior High, will clash on Friday when they meet in a highly anticipated game at Stadium East, starting at 3:00 pm.

The encounter will be followed by another intriguing semi-final showdown between Mona High and Jamaica College (JC) at 5:00 pm, with all four teams battling for a place in the final.

KC, who share the record for the most Walker Cup titles with St George’s College at nine apiece, will be aiming to move a step closer to becoming the competition’s most successful school with a record 10th title.

Excelsior, who have lifted the trophy seven times, sit third on the all-time winners’ list and will be equally determined to add another title to their collection.

With KC and Excelsior also being the last two Manning Cup champions, the stage is set for a fascinating tactical battle between two of the island’s top schoolboy football teams.

KC last captured the Walker Cup in 2016 before a subsequent change in the competition’s format effectively ruled them out of contention.

New coach Jermaine Miller is predicting a highly competitive contest against an Excelsior side led by the astute Keon Broderick.

Miller believes the KC-Excelsior contest has all the ingredients for an exciting encounter, pointing to the quality of the teams and the history of their meetings.

“This Walker Cup semi-final will be a very, very big one. It will be exciting. You’re looking at the last two Manning Cup champions facing each other, so it will definitely be a competitive one,” Miller said.

He also believes the presence of the last four Manning Cup champions in the semi-finals reflects well on the competition, while describing Friday’s clash as one that could be decided by tactical discipline and execution.

“This contest between Kingston College and Excelsior will be a mouth-watering game. We are looking forward to a real tactical battle,” he added.

“The games between myself and coach Broderick have always been good ones. They have always produced goals. For us, we know we can get on the score sheet,” he pointed out.

“We have scored in all of our games so far, so the idea is for us to keep a clean sheet. Once we can keep a clean sheet, I think we should be in for a big one.”

KC will therefore be aiming to maintain their attacking consistency while tightening up at the back against an Excelsior team expected to provide a stern examination of their title credentials.

Excelsior, which last won in 2008, are coming off a victory over Wolmer’s Boys and coach Broderick is expecting a competitive game.

“These are two teams that are tactically prepared properly. It should be a tactical masterclass in terms of how both teams come into the game and the adjustments that both teams will make throughout the game. That is very, very important. But yeah, I expect a competitive game,” said Broderick.

He continued: “But I expect my boys to display a level of football, high standard of football, that they have been playing for the past three games. And we would have had clean sheets over the last three games that we started the competition. And that is one thing that we want to continue as we move forward.”

Meanwhile, the Mona-JC semi-final promises to be another intriguing contest, with Mona seeking to overcome one of the traditional powerhouses of schoolboy football.

JC coach Jason Henry expects a tough challenge from a well-organised Mona outfit but insists his team will remain focused on its own performance rather than become distracted by the occasion.

“It’s going to be a good semi-final. It’s a good team and well coached, so I expect the competition to be very interesting,” Henry said.

“We just keep going, remaining humble. We just want to play to the best of our abilities and let the game take care of itself,” he added.

Despite their accolades in the Manning Cup competition, JC have only tasted success three times in the Walker Cup.

Mona, the new kids on the block, have one title, which they won in 2024 but lost in the 2025 final to St Catherine High.

With four strong teams now just one victory away from the final, Friday’s double-header is expected to deliver high-stakes football, tactical intrigue and another significant chapter in the battle for schoolboy supremacy.
