A mother’s tears, a son’s dream

High-achieving Spanish Town youth needs help to fund medical education

ONE young man’s dream of becoming a doctor took shape when he was just four years old. Now, at 20, after securing the academic achievements necessary to pursue a career in medicine, Junior Clarke faces another hurdle — financial hardship.

But, he’s steadfast in his pursuit of the childhood dream.

“I always wanted to not only help people but to also change how the health system works. I want to become a general surgeon,” Clarke told the Jamaica Observer in an interview last Sunday.

Born and raised in the community of Rivoli in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Clarke graduated from Jonathan Grant High School in 2024, securing 11 subjects in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams. He then moved on to the sixth-form programme at St Jago High School, where he secured an additional eight units at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level.

Clarke told the Jamaica Observer that his mother, Taschel Fisher, shouldered raising him alone as his father passed away when he was four months old.

“Growing up was challenging because we didn’t have the resources to make ends meet. I had to help my mother sell at the school gate where I graduated from,” he said, adding that Fisher has been a vendor at the institution for more than 30 years.

Earlier this year, Clarke applied to study medicine at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and was offered a place in the programme, but the cost of the tuition was beyond his financial means.

“We couldn’t manage it because it’s like $4 million a year, so I decided to take a gap year and do voluntary services, especially at the hospitals, so I can get a scholarship because for a single mother, $4 million is a lot,” Clarke lamented, adding that he’s been unsuccessful in trying to secure a scholarship.

“The scholarships I applied for required me to have six or more grade ones in CAPE, but I only got one grade one. I also started an application for a scholarship but then I realised it wouldn’t be sufficient to cover the cost [of the programme],” he said.

Clarke shared that he is currently in the process of attempting, for a second time, the CAPE subjects for which he did not achieve grade ones, to put himself in a more competitive position to secure a scholarship.

“A setback doesn’t determine your future; it’s just for you to come back and try again. Even though you may face some delays, it doesn’t determine your final outcome. I am going to apply for scholarships again,” he told the Sunday Observer.

Underscoring that there are many others whose aspirations, too, are hampered by financial difficulties, Clarke said helping others will be a priority for him in the future.

“I also want to give back to my community, St Jago High and especially Jonathan Grant High. They did not only build me but they showed me that I was created for excellence. It is not where you are from, it is where you want to go. I know if I get the assistance to achieve my goal, I will later be able to assist others to reach their goals,” said Clarke.

His mother, Fisher, told the Sunday Observer that when she learned of Clarke’s acceptance to The UWI, she could not contain her emotions.

“We were coming home in a taxi, and I held down my head and I started to cry and I said, ‘God, you are in control.’ I asked

God to let him get the help that he needs because even though I am willing to go above and beyond, I know I wouldn’t be able to come up with that kind of money,” Fisher recounted.

She explained that raising Clarke by herself was no easy feat, but with “God as her guide, she was able to pull through,”

“It was very challenging to balance the bills plus attend to his daily needs. Tears after tears, I would go to bed nightly crying asking God to help me,” she said, adding that she often got help from her mother and sister.

“Junior is very driven, well-mannered and very ambitious. Even though he is from the ghetto, his mindset is different. Anyone out there who can help my son please help him,” an emotional Fisher expressed.
