Clubs in Legend JPL spend $1.2b annually, says PFJL chairman

KINGSTON, Jamaica—The 14 clubs in the Legend Jamaica Premier League (JPL) collectively spend more than $1.2 billion annually, while the competition reaches audiences in more than 82 countries, according to Professional Football Jamaica Limited (PFJL) chairman Donovan White, who says the figures underline the league’s potential to drive economic growth, employment and sports tourism.

At a function at the AC Hotel Tuesday night, Wisynco Group, through its brand Legend beer, was introduced and officially announced as the title sponsor of the island’s highest football league, and it will be known as the Legend Jamaica Premier League.

White used the launch of the league’s five-year partnership with Wisynco Group’s Legend brand, valued at $300m, to challenge corporate Jamaica, the Government and other stakeholders to invest more heavily in football infrastructure and help unlock the sport’s wider commercial value.

The agreement, which runs through 2031, gives the country’s only fully professional sports league a new title sponsor and, White believes, an opportunity to build a stronger commercial foundation for Jamaican football.

“The talent is here. The audience is here. The economic activity is already here. What we need now is sustained commitment to help this ecosystem reach its potential,” White said.

He pointed to the significant economic activity generated by the league, which supports not only players and coaches but also grounds staff, security personnel, transport operators, food vendors, equipment suppliers and production crews.

“Behind every team sheet are households. Behind every match day are livelihoods. And the commercial opportunity extends well beyond the stadium,” he said.

“Today our 14 clubs collectively spend more than $1.2b annually. That spending supports players and coaches, ground staff and security personnel, transport operators, food, vendors, equipment suppliers and production crews,” said White who is also Jamaica’s director of tourism.

He noted that the league’s 44-week football calendar creates regular business opportunities in club communities, while its growing digital presence allows sponsors to connect with supporters well beyond Jamaica’s shores.

Through JPL TV on YouTube, online streams, match highlights and other digital platforms, the competition reaches audiences in more than 82 countries, providing commercial partners with opportunities to build brand recognition and engage football fans internationally.

“For Legend and every JPL partner, that creates repeated opportunities to turn visibility into familiarity, and familiarity into loyalty,” White said.

He thanked Wisynco and Legend for committing to the league, describing the five-year agreement as an important step in strengthening the competition’s long-term commercial prospects.

“To Wisynco and Legend: thank you for seeing the opportunity, believing in our direction, and making a commitment substantial enough to help shape our future,” he said.

However, White stressed that sponsorship alone would not be enough to realise the league’s ambitions. He called on corporate Jamaica to provide greater support for clubs, player welfare, broadcasting and community programmes, while urging the Government to treat investment in sporting facilities as a broader economic development opportunity.

He argued that improvements to playing surfaces, lighting, spectator facilities and training grounds would benefit clubs and surrounding communities while strengthening Jamaica’s ability to host regional and international sporting events.

“Better playing surfaces, lighting, spectator facilities and training grounds can serve our clubs and communities today while strengthening Jamaica’s capacity to host major regional and international events tomorrow,” White said.

According to White, a coordinated approach to sports infrastructure could also help Jamaica expand its sports tourism offering, attracting visiting teams, officials and supporters whose spending would benefit hotels, restaurants, transport operators and local suppliers.

He said the regular use of facilities through domestic competition would help develop the experience and organisational capacity needed to host major events successfully.

White also challenged the media to give greater attention to the human stories behind the competition, including the backgrounds of players, the obstacles they have overcome and the families and communities that have shaped their journeys.

He believes stronger storytelling would deepen the connection between clubs and supporters while making Jamaican football more appealing to international audiences.

The PFJL chairman also appealed directly to fans to return to the stands, bring new supporters and help create a more vibrant match-day atmosphere.

“Your presence supports livelihoods and inspires players. Help us make every match day an experience that is simply LEGENDary,” he said.

“Legend has stepped forward. Corporate Jamaica, Government, media and supporters—seize this moment with us,” White urged.
He continued: “Together, let us build a league worthy of its name—and a future worthy of Jamaica’s talent.”
