Manning’s, Kemps Hill among winners in daCosta Cup
MANNING’S School and Kemps Hill High won top-of-the-group clashes, beating Brown’s Town High and Mile Gully High in respective ISSA daCosta Cup second-round games on Tuesday.
Manning’s maintained their impressive run with a 3-0 triumph in the Group 6 encounter, handing Brown’s Town their first loss in the daCosta Cup.
Kemps Hill blanked Mile Gully 2-0 in Group 3.
Frome Technical also won back-to-back games, spanking Holmwood Technical 7-0 at the Frome in Westmoreland.
Jarvis Melyor scored in the 42nd minute to give Manning’s the lead, while Anton Scott added a second in the 78th minute before an own goal in the 80th minute rounded off the scoring.
At Mile Gully, Ricardo Dean scored in the 59th minute, and an own goal in the 88th secured full points for Kemps Hills High as they moved to six points to assume the lead in Group 3.
Edwin Allen scored a big 3-0 win over Christiana High for a four-way tie on three points in Group 5.
Also in the group, Porus High and Lennon High played to a 2-2 result.
Jamahri Tingling and Tahir Kerr scored for Irwin High as they rebounded from their loss to beat Maggotty High 2-1 at Lacovia Community Centre, while Old Harbour High thrashed Ferncourt High 6-0.
Meanwhile, there will be four more top-of-the-group clashes on Wednesday.
Former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Munro College are to lock horns in a St Elizabeth derby in Group 1, while there is a rematch of the Ben Francis Cup quarter-final when Manchester High and Clarendon College meet.
Central High are to face Glenmuir High in Group 2, and Ocho Rios High and Dinthill Technical are to clash in Group 4.
The STETHS vs Munro College rivalry is as fierce as any in any sport in the island and the form books are usually thrown out the door when they meet.
Munro, who played in the first round after missing out on qualification from the first round last season, have beaten STETHS just once in their last seven meetings, dating back to the 2022 season.
Munro will be looking to end a long run of failures against their fierce rivals.
Clarendon, though having a player short, beat Manchester 2-1 in a hotly contested Ben Francis Cup game nearly two weeks ago.
Clarendon are coming off a penalty shoot-out win over Denbigh High in their Ben Francis Cup semi-final game on Saturday after a 0-0 result in normal time.
Glenmuir will start favourites against Central in Group 2, while the Ocho Rios High vs Dinthill Technical game in Group 4 is expected to be close.
In other matches, Lacovia are away to Yallahs High; McGrath High are home to Titchfield High; and Cornwall College are away to William Knibb Memorial High.
