DJ Tygga Ty and Charly Black Take ‘Mi Love’ to No 1 in Colombia
DJ Tygga Ty is giving Colombia something to love.
The DJ and producer says Mi Love, his collaboration with Charly Black on the Shining Star riddim, has reached No 1 on an iTunes chart in Colombia, with the song generating 26,000 streams worldwide.
“I am feeling blessed because this is a tremendous achievement for my record label, as it is a great breakthrough in the Latin market where Charly Black has a huge following,” DJ Tygga Ty said.
The showing adds momentum to a project that also features Rytikal and Yaksta.
According to Tygga Ty, Yaksta’s release on the riddim previously reached No 1 on iTunes.
“The Shining Star riddim has generated over 38,000 streams worldwide. We will be shooting a number of music videos to amp up promotion in the markets overseas but the early feedback has been amazing,” he said.
DJ Tygga Ty’s credits include the Motif riddim, featuring Mr Vegas’ Put Me to Work, and the Apple Bag riddim, featuring Qraig of Voicemail’s Shake It. His collaborators also include Silk Boss, Singing Sweet, Rytikal and Yaksta.
Born in Florida and raised in New York, Tygga Ty now works across Rochester, Houston and Jamaica. His Houston club engagements include Lov3 and Vice, while his ties to Spanish Town’s Powasquad International keep him connected to Jamaican sound-system culture.
For him, that relationship means “family, loyalty, and respect.”
Those principles took shape during his early years helping to string up sound systems and watching artistes record dubplates. Growing up in a predominantly Black community with a Puerto Rican presence, he learned that the music came with responsibilities: respect its foundations and deliver when your turn arrives
His working philosophy remains direct.
“You only as good as your last show, and customer service is your best friend in this field of work,” said Tygga Ty.
Radio offers another test of that philosophy. He hosts an hour-long Friday programme on Rochester’s The Beat 105.5 FM, available through iHeartRadio, and has appeared on Buffalo’s WBLK and Houston’s 97.9 The Box. His radio work also includes 25-minute hip-hop mixes aimed at younger urban listeners.
“Radio also helps me work on my people skills of talking to people I may never meet and make them feel like a star through music and dialogue,” he said.
With Mi Love finding listeners in Colombia, that audience is stretching further.
“This success just shows the reach of dancehall music in the Latin market as well as global spaces that welcome dancehall and that’s a great look for the future,” said Tygga Ty.
