Beenie Man’s ‘Who Am I (Sim Simma)’ hits gold in the United Kingdom

Almost three years after it was certified gold in America, Who Am I (Sim Simma), the 1997 hit song by Beenie Man, has been certified gold in the United Kingdom.

The certification was issued on Friday, October 23, by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), for the equivalent measured in sales and streaming of 400,000 units.

Who Am I was Beenie Man’s major breakthrough hit in the United States, where it scaled the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #40 and storming its way to #15 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Over in the UK, it peaked at #10.

The song is featured on the inescapable Playground rhythm by respected music producer and artiste manager Jeremy Harding. It is also among the tracks on Beenie Man’s Grammy-nominated The Many Moods of Moses album.

In a previous interview, Harding commented on the international success of Who Am I.

“This song has become a dancehall anthem all over the world. I’m glad it’s finally gotten an official status of accomplishment,” said Harding.

He recalled the recording session for Who Am I.

“It was clear that Beenie Man really connected with the track. I don’t think that song could have found a better union on a different rhythm. And the fact that it still resonates for another generation proves that it wasn’t just great timing or circumstance; it’s truly just a great song, period,” Harding reasoned.

The Playground rhythm also featured the breakthrough hit for Mr Vegas titled Hand Inna Di Air (Nike Air), as well as Pet and Pamper by Mad Cobra, Infiltrate by Sean Paul and Strong Performer by Spragga Benz.

This is the second certification in the United Kingdom for Beenie Man. Dude, featuring Miss Thing, was certified silver six years ago.
