Gallant Groom ‘stakes’ Mile claim with 24¼-length demolition in Big Sub Memorial
FOUR-year-old American-bred dark bay/brown colt Gallant Groom
sent his loudest warning yet to his Mouttet Mile rivals, delivering a breathtaking 24¼-length rout in the $1.25-million Errol “Big Sub” Subratie Memorial Trophy at Caymanas Park on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
The Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over a mile (1,600m) was supposed to be a test. Instead, it turned into an exhibition.
Trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Tevin Foster, Gallant Groom — now three consecutive wins from four starts this season — stalked early leader Neo Star (Raddesh Roman) in second for the first part of the race, travelling comfortably with his ears pricked.
The race was over in a matter of strides. When Foster asked him to go, sending him through to take up the running entering the half-mile (800m) turn, Gallant Groom simply exploded.
With every stride he opened up, his lead growing from two, to five, to 10, to daylight. Down the stretch, Foster could afford a glance behind, as his mount powered home alone to stop the clock in a smart 1:36.1 (23.3 x 45.3 x 1:10.3 x 1:23.1).
Oil Machine (Omar Walker) was best of the rest in second, with
Whizz Kidd (Richie Shakes) third, but there was only one horse anyone was talking about in the winners’ enclosure.
