Old faithful still paying dividends
AT seven years old most sprinters are slowing down. Wall Street Trader, however, is speeding up.
Sunday’s (October 18, 2026) win in the Vassell “Jolly Man” Najiar Memorial was not a flash in the pan for the Rohan Mathie veteran. It was another example of why he remains one of the most consistent — and reliable — campaigners at Overnight Allowance level.
The American-bred, dark bay/brown gelding has made a career out of hitting the board. He rarely runs a bad race, and even when the pace doesn’t suit or the draw is against him, he finds a way to be in the firing line in deep stretch.
What was most impressive on Sunday was the turn of foot. At 5 1/2 furlongs (1,100m), against younger, speedier rivals like California Crown and She’s That Girl, many thought the old boy would be left flat footed when the sprint went on.
Instead, he produced what might have been his best finish of the season.
California Crown (Robert Halledeen) broke smartly and showed the way from She’s That Girl (Raddesh Roman), while Fit To Fire (Tevin Foster) recovered from a sluggish start to slot into third ahead of Diesel Train (Phillip Parchment), with
Wall Street Trader patiently ridden behind going into the half-mile turn.
She’s That Girl struck the front in deep stretch and looked set to steal it but Jaheim Anderson had yet to go for his mount. With the power button switched on and asked for maximum effort, Wall Street Trader found another gear and powered home to win, going away.
Wall Street Trader won by 2¼ lengths ahead of She’s That Girl and California Crown in 1:06.0.
