St Catherine primary schools gifted with creative works
TWO primary schools in St Catherine have received original creative works from senior journalist and creative writer Garfield L Angus in a gesture aimed at celebrating education, inspiring children, and recognising the dedicated educators who help shape Jamaica’s future.
On September 28 Angus presented a framed copy of his creative work, The Beacon of Spanish Town, to St John’s Primary School, while Angels Primary received The Anchor Through the Storm, a poem highlighting the important role of guidance counsellors in helping children navigate emotional, academic and personal challenges.
At St John’s, Angus described the presentation as a “genuine honour and privilege”, explaining that the work was inspired by his belief that schools are among the greatest beacons of hope in any society.
He said schools do far more than provide academic instruction, noting that they help to shape character, build confidence, nurture dreams, and prepare children to make meaningful contributions to their communities and country.
“A beacon does not choose who may benefit from its light. It shines, guides and gives hope,” Angus said, expressing the hope that St John’s Primary would continue to guide young minds towards knowledge, integrity, excellence and service.
He also recognised the leadership of Principal Louise Clarke, noting that educational leadership involves identifying potential, encouraging excellence, and helping children to understand that their futures are worth pursuing.
Clarke welcomed the presentation, describing it as a validation of the work being undertaken by teachers and students. She pointed to the school’s mantra, “Moving from good to great as we strive for excellence”, and emphasised that the institution’s achievements are the result of a collective effort involving staff, students and the wider St John’s family.
She thanked Angus for recognising the school and said the presentation demonstrates that the work of teachers and students is not going unnoticed.

At Angels Primary, Angus turned his attention to another important aspect of a child’s educational journey — the emotional and personal support provided by guidance counsellors. He observed that children often enter the classroom carrying challenges that may extend far beyond their school bags, including emotional, academic and personal difficulties.
Against this background, he described guidance counsellors as “anchors” who help children remain steady when confronted by the storms of life.
Guidance Counsellor Aneavah Henry expressed heartfelt appreciation for the recognition, describing it as meaningful acknowledgement of the often demanding work involved in supporting children.
For Angus, the presentations represent more than the gifting of framed literary works. They form part of his broader commitment to using journalism and creative writing to celebrate people and institutions; preserve memories; and encourage young Jamaicans to pursue excellence, integrity and lifelong learning.
His creative portfolio includes the inspirational book Triumphs, with additional publications in development, including From Fatherless to Fearless: The Story of a Jamaican Who Became an International Cancer Specialist, scheduled for publication in December 2026.
He believes that the written word can preserve memory while inspiring future generations, allowing “yesterday to speak to tomorrow”.
