Andrew Tosh, Anthony B lead musical salute to Peter Tosh

Patrons braved rains to honour late singer’s memory

“I am moved by the turnout of patrons who came out to pay tribute to the legacy of my father despite the rains,” said Niambe McIntosh, head of the Peter Tosh Foundation, reflecting on a celebration that underscored the enduring power of Peter Tosh’s music and message.

That spirit of devotion was on full display at Woodstock Beach in Negril, Westmoreland, on Saturday, October 17, as artistes, cultural enthusiasts, and music lovers turned out in droves for Tosh Fest 2026, despite the inclement weather. They gathered with one purpose in mind: To honour the reggae icon while celebrating 50 years since the release of his landmark album Legalize It.

From the spiritual grounding of Nyabinghi drumming to the impassioned performances of established and emerging acts, the celebration brought Peter Tosh’s revolutionary catalogue and uncompromising principles into focus, reminding those gathered that his legacy extends far beyond the music.

Among the evening’s most moving moments was the appearance of Peter Tosh’s son, Andrew, whose striking vocal resemblance to his father lent added poignancy to renditions of some of the reggae legend’s hits.

As he delivered the familiar songs, patrons joined in, transforming the performances into a collective expression of remembrance for a man whose voice continues to resonate across generations.

Anthony B brought his own intensity to the tribute, combining high-energy delivery with the conscious messaging that has long defined his artistry. For the artiste, following in Peter Tosh’s ideological footsteps was a deliberate choice rather than a passing musical influence.

“While others were doing other things, I chose not to follow the crowd; I chose to follow Peter Tosh,” he remarked, underscoring the enduring influence of the late singer’s fearlessness and willingness to challenge convention.

The evening also featured performances and selections from poet Mutabaruka, Grammy Award-winning songwriter Medisun, conscious music act Karbon, young artistes Dahvid Slur and Aza Lineage, and selector Rory Stone Love, whose selections contributed to a programme rooted in reggae’s cultural and revolutionary traditions.

The celebration opened with a Nyabinghi drumming ceremony, paying homage to the spiritual traditions that helped shape reggae music, followed by a screening highlighting Peter Tosh’s musical legacy before the stage came alive with performances.

Yet, at the heart of the celebration was the message behind the music.

Released in 1976, Legalize It became one of the artiste’s career-defining works, boldly confronting the stigma surrounding cannabis while speaking to broader themes of personal freedom, human rights, and political advocacy. Fifty years later, its message remains inseparable from the legacy of an artiste who used his platform to challenge injustice and demand equality.

McIntosh said the anniversary provided an opportunity to revisit the album not simply as a landmark in reggae history, but as a powerful statement of freedom and human rights.

Despite the rain delaying the start of the festivities, the turnout in Peter Tosh’s home parish held particular significance for the foundation, reinforcing the importance of keeping his legacy alive in the community most closely associated with his roots.

“We made the intentional commitment to hosting the celebrations in the parish he loved,” McIntosh said, adding that the foundation anticipates Tosh Fest growing in local and international patronage, bringing economic benefits to Westmoreland residents while establishing the event as a fixture on Jamaica’s cultural and entertainment calendar.

Tosh Fest formed part of a wider week of activities celebrating the singer’s life and work. Taste of Tosh, held at the Peter Tosh Museum on October 14, brought members of the music fraternity together in tribute to the legend.

Tosh Talks, staged on October 15 and 16 at Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and The University of the West Indies, respectively, featured academic presentations on Tosh’s life, legacy, and Legalize It, alongside panel discussions.

The commemorations continued on October 19, National Heroes’ Day and Peter Tosh’s earthstrong, with dawn Nyabinghi drumming and a blessing by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church at his resting place in Belmont, Westmoreland.
