Excelerate signs 11-year Bahamas LNG deal
Initial supplies to come from Jamaica ahead of planned hub development
EXCELERATE Energy has secured an 11-year liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement for a planned energy hub in The Bahamas, with initial deliveries expected to begin from its Jamaican operations in the first quarter of 2027.
The agreement with AxDo Bahamas Limited, announced on Thursday, November 5, provides for the supply of up to 16 trillion British thermal units (TBtu) of LNG annually and represents a significant step in Excelerate’s strategy to use Jamaica as a distribution base for the wider Caribbean.
AxDo, a joint venture between international energy trading company Axpo and Bahamas-based energy and maritime logistics firm Domicisle LNG, will become an anchor customer of Excelerate’s proposed offshore LNG storage and distribution terminal near Grand Bahama.
The arrangement gives Excelerate a long-term customer for the project even as the physical infrastructure is being developed. Initial deliveries will be supported by the company’s existing LNG storage, supply and logistics capabilities in Jamaica, before the planned deployment of a floating storage unit (FSU) in The Bahamas in 2028.
The second phase remains subject to permitting, construction timelines and other contractual conditions, the company has said.
Excelerate acquired Jamaica’s integrated LNG and power operations from New Fortress Energy in May 2025, taking control of the Montego Bay and Old Harbour LNG terminals, along with the Clarendon combined heat and power plant.
The acquisition established a platform through which the US-based energy company intends to expand its presence in the Caribbean, using existing infrastructure to serve smaller markets where developing stand-alone LNG import facilities may be costly.
Central to that strategy is the Old Harbour floating LNG terminal, which will be used to provide bulk storage and access to supplies that can be distributed to neighbouring islands using smaller vessels.
The Bahamas agreement is among the first major commercial developments supporting Excelerate’s plan to establish Jamaica as a regional LNG distribution hub. The company has not indicated how much of the contracted annual volume will initially be supplied through Jamaica or what additional investment may be required to accommodate the new business.
“The Bahamas LNG Hub demonstrates the potential of our integrated platform to create new opportunities around our infrastructure,” said Oliver Simpson, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer of Excelerate Energy.
“By combining LNG supply, logistics and infrastructure with strong downstream partners, we can develop new markets and expand access to natural gas across the region. We’re pleased to partner with AxDo and look forward to supporting growing demand in The Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean,” he added.
The proposed Bahamas LNG hub is designed to serve power generation companies, marine operators and other commercial customers requiring natural gas. Its location near Grand Bahama places it along a major Caribbean shipping corridor, with opportunities to supply LNG as marine fuel to cruise ships and other vessels, an activity known as bunkering.
The facility is also intended to support LNG distribution across the Bahamian islands and potentially other Caribbean markets.
AxDo was established in October 2026 to conduct small-scale LNG supply and bunkering operations, combining Axpo’s international energy trading capabilities with Domicisle’s local distribution and maritime logistics experience.
Axpo’s head of small-scale LNG, Daniele Corti, said the partnership would allow the company to extend its supply-chain capabilities into the Caribbean.
“Reliable access to energy is essential for the continued development of The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. Axpo brings extensive experience in energy markets and international supply chains,” Corti said.
“This agreement allows us to apply that know-how to the Caribbean, working with key partners Excelerate and Domicisle to support the development of a flexible LNG hub for The Bahamas and the wider region,” he added.
Meanwhile, Domicisle LNG Chief Executive Officer Greg Buffington said the agreement would support the development of a more reliable natural gas supply network across the Bahamian islands, particularly for electricity generation and marine operations.
“As a Bahamian-based company, our focus is on making cleaner-burning natural gas more accessible to power producers, marine operators and communities that need dependable energy,” Buffington said.
