daCosta Cup teams hunt remaining last-8 spots
Fireworks are expected in this afternoon’s final set of round-of-16 games in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition, with six quarter-final places to be filled.
No fewer than 12 teams remain in the hunt to reach the next round where they hope to join former champions Cornwall College and Glenmuir High who booked their spots on Thursday.
Former champions Garvey Maceo High, Dinthill Technical, Clarendon College and Munro College as well as last season’s semi-finalists McGrath High are among the teams chasing quarter-final spots.
Last season’s champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Manning’s School will be honouring their fixtures, however, as consecutive losses knocked them out of contention.
STETHS and Manning’s could both have a say in who will advance.
Garvey Maceo, who qualified for the round of 16 as a best third-place team must beat Zone 1 winners Cornwall College, if they are to secure their spot.
Both teams will be without regular starters. Cornwall College will have to play without three players who were sent off on Thursday following a brawl in their win against Frome Technical, while Garvey Maceo had finished their come-from-behind 2-2 result against Ocho Rios High with 10 players.
Cornwall can afford to rest players after three-straight wins, but Garvey Maceo must play for all three points as the winner in the game between Ocho Rios and Frome Technical would advance ahead of them.
Ocho Rios will start favourites as they are expected to be at full strength, while Frome Technical will be without four players who were sent off on Thursday. There is also concern about the fitness of top midfielder Wayne Mullings who limped off the field in that encounter.
Glenmuir High need a point to top the Zone 2 points table, but Manchester High must win with Kemps Hill High set to take on STETHS at Wembley Centre of Excellence.
A win for Manchester High would see both teams advancing, but Glenmuir High have been red-hot, winning both games and are yet to concede a goal in the competition this season.
Kemps Hill, semi-finalists last season, trail Manchester High on goal-difference. Kemps Hill must beat STETHS by at least two goals and hope Manchester lose.
A point from their game against Lacovia High would be enough to see Dinthill Technical through but a loss would see the St Elizabeth-based Lacovia advancing.
Denbigh High need another miracle, another giant-killing act when they face Clarendon College who have their backs to the wall.
Clarendon had edged Denbigh in the semi-finals of the Ben Francis Cup, winning on penalty kicks after they ended 0-0 in regulation time.
Three teams are going after two spots in Zone 4. Joint leaders Munro and McGrath need only a draw against Central High and Manning’s, respectively.
