Romain Virgo bares his soul on My Woman & I

Reggae singer draws on relationship struggles to deliver a message of enduring love

For Romain Virgo, vulnerability has never been something to shy away from. Whether through his music or in his personal life, the reggae singer believes there is value in allowing people to see the person behind the performer, even when the emotions being shared are difficult.

That openness is at the heart of his new single, My Woman & I, a deeply personal offering inspired by a period of uncertainty in his own relationship and a reminder that committed love is not necessarily love without struggle.

Written about a year ago, the song emerged at a time when Virgo and his wife, Elizabeth, were navigating some of the challenges that can arise in any relationship.

Rather than suppressing those feelings, the singer turned to music to process them, recording what was on his heart.

“Relationships and everything that comes with it, those moments when it feels like things aren’t going to work, that’s how I was feeling about my personal relationship in the moment,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “Relationships are like a roller-coaster ride and sometimes, as musicians, the best way to handle these things is to put it in the music. I put pen to paper and I just wrote how I was feeling and recorded it.”

For Virgo, the decision to draw on such a personal experience speaks to his commitment to authenticity. He wants listeners to recognise themselves in his music, particularly those who have experienced the uncertainty that can accompany a relationship while still believing in the possibility of working through it.

“The world, by now, knows me and knows that I am not afraid to show the real side of me. Whether through music or in real life, I am authentic always,” he said.

That willingness to be candid extends to the conversations surrounding the song at home.

When Virgo first played My Woman & I for his wife, her response was not quite the enthusiastic reception he might have hoped for.

“If I’m going to be as vulnerable as possible, the first time she heard this song, she hissed her teeth while laughing at the same time,” he recalled. “I would trouble her and tell her this is the song that she will probably hate the most.”

The reaction, however, appears to have softened. Virgo recently caught her singing the song, prompting a laugh when she remembered that she had supposedly disliked it.

For him, the moment reflects a growing understanding of how music allows him to work through his experiences, including those that are deeply personal.

His creative process, he explained, means drawing on what he is feeling in the moment rather than shying away from difficult emotions. More importantly, the song is not about presenting a relationship as perfect. Instead, Virgo hopes it will resonate with people who understand that commitment is sometimes tested by circumstances that cannot be resolved overnight.

“I hope this single will give people who look to music for their peace and to express themselves. I hope it gives them a sense of belonging,” he said. “I hope they hear someone who has been through some tough times when it comes to relationships and now that it just something that comes with the territory.”

His message to listeners is simple: Difficulty does not have to mean defeat.

“When you’re committed to something, you have to find ways to work through issues and keep showing up, don’t give up on love,” he said.

Though written a year ago, My Woman & I is only now making its way to listeners. Virgo explained that the timing was not right for its release earlier, particularly in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, when he delayed the release and promotion of several songs already in the pipeline.

With the time now right, the single will also serve as a precursor to a larger project currently in development. Sources suggest a 2027 release on Ineffable Records.

“This track will lead into something bigger. We working on a project that we can’t give too much details on just yet. Just know this single is a part of a bigger picture,” he said of the track produced by Mr G and revives the classic Dub Fire rhythm made famous on Dennis Brown’s Promised Land.

For now, My Woman & I offers listeners an intimate look at an artiste willing to turn his own experiences into music, with a message that extends beyond romance. Love, as Virgo presents it, is not simply about the moments when everything falls into place, but also the willingness to keep showing up when it does not.

My Woman & I was released on Friday, October 30, and is available on all digital platforms.
