Men and women have different brains
There is no doubt about it — women are from Venus and men are from Mars and our brains are living proof of that.
With advances in technology, scientists are now able to view the detailed activities of the brain, further confirming just how men and women are different.
Dr Herbert Gayle, social anthropologist and lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at the University of the West Indies, says there are crucial differences between the male and female brain.
1. Though men’s brains are larger, women’s brains are more connected. A man’s brain is eight to 10 per cent larger than that of a woman. And the differences go even further than that as men’s brains are capable of depth thinking (with about seven times more grey matter) while women’s brains are more interconnected (with 10 times more white matter). Men are more likely to focus on one thing and do it well, while women are able to do multiple things at the same time.
2. Women are more empathetic. Because of their more developed frontal cortex and emotional sites, women are more empathetic. Men are hardwired to be hunters.
3. Women are all about self-preservation. Men are wired to be involved in risky behaviours, oftentimes to their detriment. Women, on the other hand, are wired to be better at making decisions to protect themselves and their children.
4. Women need to talk a lot. Research by American neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizendine and others show that women speak an average of 20,000 words daily compared to only 7,000 words for men. This means that on average, women talk three times as much as men.
