Yeast can affect other areas too

WHEN many women think of yeast infections, the first thing that comes to mind is the vaginal infection characterised by terrible itching and discharge. But did you know that the fungus can affect many other areas of the body as well?

According to obstetrician-gynaecologist Dr Anna-Kay Taylor Christmas, candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by yeast, and it can affect all genders and ages of people.

“The genitals are the most common site for the infection, especially in females, causing a discharge and itching. It may also affect males causing similar symptoms on and around the penis,” she explained.

Below are other areas in which the fungus can present itself.

Skin

According to Dr Taylor Christmas, yeast usually affects under the breasts, in the groin and other skin creases, which leads to itching, irritation and even bleeding if severe. She explained that the risk increases with obesity.

Mouth

The doctor said this is known as thrush and it tends to commonly occur in babies and the elderly. “When seen in adults, it is usually a sign of a weakened immune system such as with AIDS, conditions that require steroids for treatment, or uncontrolled diabetes. It can cause pain in the mouth and throat, difficulty swallowing, along with redness, sores and spots in the mouth,” she said.

Diaper area

She said this can cause spots, redness and swelling to the baby’s bottom and genitals and may become quite severe. “If a persistent rash is noted, home remedies should be stopped and the baby taken to see the doctor right away.”

According to Dr Taylor Christmas, less commonly, the fungus can also infect the bladder and cause a urinary tract infection. It can also infect the nails and most seriously the bloodstream (usually seen in hospitalised patients).

She said prevention is always better than cure when it comes to yeast, so people should ensure a balanced diet low on simple, processed carbohydrates.

Dr Taylor Christmas advised people to keep skin creases and genital areas clean and dry and wear cool cotton/natural fibre clothing as much as possible.

“Keep all chronic illnesses under good control and if you are diagnosed with a yeast infection, ensure that all the medication is taken completely, even if you feel better before the medication is finished,” she said.
