Remember: Eliminating sexual violence

TODAY is the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, proclaimed two years ago by the United Nations General Assembly.

The day was observed in order to raise awareness of the need to put an end to conflict-related sexual violence, to honour the victims and survivors of sexual violence around the world, and to pay tribute to all those who have courageously devoted their lives to and lost their lives in standing up for the eradication of these crimes.

According to the UN, the date was chosen to commemorate the adoption on June 19, 2008 of Security Council resolution 1820 (2008), in which the Council condemned sexual violence as a tactic of war and an impediment to peace building.

Today the international day is being celebrated under the theme ‘Preventing Sexual Violence Crimes through Justice and Deterrence’.

The UN also announced that a panel discussion to commemorate the second annual International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict will be held at their headquarters in New York on Tuesday, June 20.

We are being encouraged to take part and follow the conversation on social media by using the hashtag #EndRapeinWar.
