So your mate’s family dislikes you…
So you have met your soulmate, you both are in love and are ready to commit. But there’s a spoke in the wheel – your in-laws dislike you. Should you back down and walk away, or should you press on and try to win the likes and possibly the love of the family?
Below are four tips for standing your ground and gaining the respect you deserve.
1. Be respectful. Regardless of how you feel about them or how they treat you, always treat them in a manner that commands admiration for your character. Even if you’re bashed, don’t attack. Kill them with kindles and eventually they’ll have nothing to gripe about.
2. Love your partner. Ensure that they see that despite what they say, your commitment to your partner is not easily shaken. At the end of the day, it is really not about the family, it is about the relationship.
3. Be yourself. Don’t try to be what you think the family will admire or respect – be yourself! This will earn you greater respect than if you pretended to be a carbon copy of what they say they want. Be authentic because one day when the real you steps forward, you could end up losing everything you were trying to build.
4. Show them love. Regardless of what they might think of you, show them that you will not stoop to their level. Show love, even in the face of adversity.
