Best anti-ageing foods for women
AS we grow older our bodies naturally go into decline and it shows in our skin. And beyond the creases and laugh lines, our organs slowly become less efficient and in some cases begin to shut down.
There are, however, some foods which, if incorporated in a healthy diet, will slow down the ageing of our bodies.
Below general, laparoscopic and bariatric surgeon Dr Alfred Dawes explains.
1. Almonds and almond milk
Almonds are a rich source of calcium and are low in carbohydrates making them ideal even for low carb diets. “Calcium supports healthy bones especially after menopause when women are at increased risk of osteoporosis,” Dr Dawes said.
2. Blueberries
Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and, according to Dr Dawes, antioxidants are naturally occurring chemicals that mop up free radicals which are produced in our bodies and can damage cells. He said free radicals can damage skin leading to wrinkles, and are also implicated in the development of cancer.
3. Avocado
“Avocados are rich in healthy fats that help in the functioning of the immune system and decreases inflammation,” Dr Dawes said. “Fats keep you full for longer so you end up eating fewer calories per day, helping to maintain a healthy weight.”
4. Wine
Dr Dawes advised that drinking a glass of wine a day has been shown to decrease the risk of heart disease. He said wine is rich in antioxidants that help combat ageing in the skin and other organs.
5. Water
“As we age, our skin loses elasticity. Adequate hydration helps to keep the skin looking healthy and supple. Our kidney function also naturally declines. Ensuring that we drink adequate water will increase blood flow to the kidneys and in turn promote overall good health,” Dr Dawes said.
