It’s June, how are you doing with those resolutions?

It’s June, how are you doing with those resolutions?

BY PENDA HONEYGHAN

N EW year’s resolutions often come from a place of deep desire and motivation to achieve something or a list of things that we believe will take us a step closer to self-actualisation. And while some of us manage to stay true to these goals, there are others who may start off great but end up struggling before finally deciding to throw in the towel.

We are now almost halfway through the year and All Woman wanted to get a sense of where people were with those resolutions set back in January. Here is how a few of our readers are managing so far:

Tashay, 24, student:

I almost forgot that I had made a new year’s resolution. Honestly, for a minute I even forgot what it actually was. With that said, I am sure I will have to do summer school, so there goes my desire for a sun-kissed summer. Maybe next year I will learn how to balance more and have a better chance of achieving it.

Vinette, 34, cosmetologist:

I wanted to move my shop to a more public, more spacious, and comfortable location, and to get equipment. I bought some of the equipment the other day but I am still searching for a better location, even though I have a few good ones to check out next week. With things going so well, hopefully I can find a good man. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Ichea, 29, telecommunications agent:

One of the biggest challenges I have is procrastinating, and second to that is my challenge with eating healthy foods. I recently discovered that I have heart issues and I needed to change my lifestyle and diet, but it is so hard. The fear of a heart attack is the only reason I try to eat semi-healthy, so I have been researching and finding recipes and linking with vegetarian bloggers to improve my skills with making healthier meals. I think I am doing much better with that now and some of the foods are actually delicious. I just wish I wasn’t a foodie. As for the procrastination, I am way behind on that. I definitely need to do more to address that.

Sabrina, 24, marketing consultant:

I had so many things I wanted to get done, one being getting a car of my own and also working on my relationship with God as I work on myself. At least one of those things is half done — with the help of my mom I am halfway to driving my own car. I have also started looking at how to map out working for myself professionally and, as far as it goes regarding working on my relationship with God, I have been taking my time to know Him. I will admit that it is very difficult, but I am focused and I will get there.

Tamian, 32, bank teller:

Paying off my student loans was this year’s goal. But based on all the little things that came up, including two major health challenges, one in my case and the other involving my mom, I have a little setback. And, while that doesn’t seem possible this year, I am praying for a miracle. But if it doesn’t happen, and nothing else comes up, I would say that I should be good by early next year and I simply can’t wait for that weight to be off my shoulders.

Javon, 36, truck driver:

My goal was to a better father to my children and to focus on them and not the mother, and to work on getting my own truck. At six months into the year I believe that I am doing much better with the kids — I see them more and I don’t allow the mother to upset me. I just laugh it off now when she tries to upset me [at one point I wouldn’t even go for the kids because of her attitude]. Now they say to me, “Daddy, thank you for coming so often now, because Mommy said if you loved us you would be here.”

I felt like beating myself up after I heard that but, as my eight-year-old said, “Just correct yourself, Daddy.”

I’m still saving towards the truck, but I want to give the kids a little fun time at a hotel so I will not get to save as much next month. It doesn’t matter, though, because I just want them to be happy.
