I don’t want a committed relationship because…
Women are seen as natural nurturers — members of the species who seek, inevitably, to nest into motherhood and family life. But more and more women are fighting this assumption, and are now proclaiming that they need not fit into a system of marriage, and would rather be free and disengaged than committed and “trapped”.
Some share why below.
Candice:
I made up my mind that I didn’t want any children or marriage because I saw what that did to my mother growing up. My mother committed to my father by giving him her all, and he slept with the next door neighbour and had not one, but three children outside. My mother died a very sad woman. I could never desire that. I decided that I am going to ensure I live my best life without the strings, and that is exactly what I am doing.
Andriene:
I think being in a committed relationship is like slavery – your freedom is being controlled by vows or a ring or a promise and most times it turns out to be a bitter end. I’d rather live free and not in fear of giving my life to a man and then finding out further down the road that he’s flawed. So I decided just over two years ago that I am not going to follow that system.
Petrice:
My personality is weird because the things that most women desire, I don’t like. I really just want to be happy with me and that is it. I think women [in committed relationships] are enslaved by these men and unless women take a stand against it, it will continue.
MH:
I decided that I had enough abuse and I’d rather live my life free than in chains so right now I have someone I am sleeping with but he understands that that’s all there is to it and nothing more. I refuse to take another slap in the face in the name of commitment.
