Crossing professional lines
It is quite understandable why some people fall for their work colleagues – work is where we spend most of our waking hours. But the workplace relationship can be a rocky road to tread, as the people below share.
MF:
I would warn every single woman not to fall into this trap – and indeed it is a trap. I was working for this company where I met my ex, the boss, and for several months we kept our intimate life outside of the professional environment because I knew if people found out, my chances of promotions would be nil. Then they hired a new female worker and I realised that she was progressing and I wasn’t, and he would take her to work while I took the bus. I really do not know what got into me one day but she made a statement and I slapped her and lost my job. It was a wrong turn and I regret it and so I am warning every single young woman – think twice as you cannot expect love from someone you call boss.
CT:
It is not wise to date anyone at your job whether he is a boss or not because it will backfire on you. I was dating my supervisor for a while and when he left me for someone else and got her hired at the same company, it hurt me so badly. I felt like he placed a knife through my heart. I had to resign.
KR:
Ladies, do not mix business with pleasure. You will regret it if you do because once you mix pleasure, your business will be everybody’s business. I went through one year of ridicule and shame after people saw me out with the CEO of the company I was working for. There were days I never wanted to go to work because I couldn’t take the chatter about it and after I left the job, it still had an impact. I would never walk that street again in my life and I would like to encourage all women not to.
DK:
My ex was a co-worker and it was a bitter ending because when we were breaking up, it was like it was the hot topic at work. I was engaged to him and he basically left me to be with someone who worked in my department. I am not sure how they got involved but when I found out I sent in my letter of resignation and that was it for me and him. I heard she got pregnant for him and he left her. I am glad I didn’t go that far with him but I say all this to really say – go to work to do work and do work only. Avoid mix up.
BM:
I would never make such a decision ever again in my life as dating someone you should see in a professional light can bring you so much shame as a woman. When we broke up I saw the light and I say to every woman out there, do not involve yourself intimately where it should only be professionally.
