‘Love honour and respect each other’ – What our parents’ relationships taught us
MANY values and morals we hold fast to are as a result of our childhood experiences. From these experiences we either vow to never go down a particular path, or vow to live the exact way and recreate memories.
But whether our childhood experiences were good or bad, lessons are intertwined, especially from the relationship our parents shared.
All Woman asked readers to share what their parents’ relationship taught them, and this is what they said.

Talk things through since no one can read your mind.

They taught me loyalty. They are loyal to their vows and the love they share. They’re now married for 39 years.
Lenworth Robinson:
Communication and forgiveness are important. They had a lot of communication issues, which caused arguments, but nevertheless they stuck with each other. From observation I learnt the importance of forgiveness and communication.

Love, honour and respect each other and give a helpful hand in every situation.

Marriage will only work when both parties are committed.

I learnt how to be a better parent and I also realised the things I would not want in my own relationship. I also learnt the importance of communication and that leaving your children, regardless of the circumstances, is not a wise move. Be there for your children.

No matter what, don’t take disrespect as a welcome. My mother stood her ground and left when she realised things were beyond reconciliation. That taught me to be strong and look out for my mental health and safety even if it meant going against society’s standards.
Michelle Thomas:
Love has no bounds and there is no perfect relationship. You’re going to go through some rough periods with trust issues and instability in your marriage, but you have to really love each other. What has kept them is that they love each other and really worked on it. This is work that takes every day of their marriage. And from them I also learnt the importance of prayer.
