‘She said my money is like schoolboy money’
BREAK-UPS can turn people into bitter monsters and, as such, they can get pretty messy. With emotions raging and tempers flaring, it’s not uncommon for one partner or both to say something that hits below the belt. All Woman caught up with a few of these people who have been scarred by the hurtful words hurled by a partner during a break-up.
Shereen, 24, police officer:
My ex-boyfriend told me that my private parts had an odour and I should consider better hygiene. It’s funny that he was willing to stay with someone with “rotten parts”, because I was the one who was leaving him.
Chevaughn 31, tradesman:
My girlfriend of two years told me that the child I was walking around with and bragging about may not even be mine because she was messing around with my cousin with whom she didn’t have to pretend to enjoy intercourse.
Debbie, 36, insurance agent:
My ex, whom I was with for close to four and a half years, told me that he was sorry he didn’t throw me out like that trash I am after I was raped about a month into us dating. The words still haunt me.
Iyana, 34, customer service agent:
After my partner cheated on me and begged me to stay, but I insisted I couldn’t keep settling, he told me I should just go because I was not anything special and he didn’t know why he had picked up someone who was way below his usual standards.
Kevaughn, 28, inventory clerk:
After she told me that if I couldn’t man up I needed to get out her life, she then said that my money is like schoolboy money — after a week it finishes. This was after I sacrificed two weeks’ pay to make sure that her son had everything for school out of love, though I needed to sort out something for my mom.
Donovan, 36, lab technician:
In the midst of proposing to my ex she got up, obviously very angry and dismissive, pulled away her hand, then started to say I had no ambition to even ask her that. In front of her friends and a few of my close friends, she started asking embarrassing questions like, “You feel comfortable getting married in a rented house? You consider upgrading your car or something with the money you are going to take to keep wedding?” right before storming off with a mouthful of other things to say. Truth is, I had just applied to the NHT to sort out a house because I wanted a future with this girl. So, of course, my marriage proposal ended in a break-up because after all that I knew she couldn’t be the right person for me.
Abigail, 24, university student:
After finding out that I had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, he said that he couldn’t continue with me because he did not want to have screwed up kids. I had never had an episode before and I take my medication, but his words caused me to have an episode. I had several panic attacks in the months after because I was so hurt by his words.
