Respect is fundamental to relationships. It provides a guide to how people behave when relating to others, making relationships healthier and more meaningful. It is important for couples to have respect for each other, and if they don’t, it is best to separate. Without respect you cannot communicate effectively or add any value to your partner’s life. So how can one earn the respect of his or her partner?
1. Trust your partner and their word
You have to give your partner space – being watchful and always peering over your partner’s shoulder can birth disrespect because no one likes being supervised constantly. No one wants to feel like they are incarcerated by another person in the name of a relationship. You have to trust your partner and believe what they tell you until proven otherwise.
2. Be true
If you are constantly disappointing your partner, that will create more disagreements. With a build-up of disagreements, one person is sure to cross the line and say something that will send the wrong message. You cannot communicate effectively in a heated argument. Be true and honest – if you cannot do something, simply say so.
3. Communicate when calm
You are more likely to say something you will regret later if you choose to vent in the heat of the moment. It is wise to keep calm and keep your mouth closed, leave the problem alone for a day or two, and then you talk about it. When you are calm, respectfully ask your partner to hear you out, and listen as your partner voices their concerns too. Also, avoid using expletives or raising your tone when speaking to your partner, as that alone can set the atmosphere for disrespect.
4. Do not assume a disagreement means disrespect
Avoid making assumptions because you and your partner had a disagreement. Disagreements don’t mean it is the end of the road for the relationship. It simply means you are sharing your different perspectives, which is healthy for your individuality. Do not assume your partner does not love you because he/she does not agree with everything you say.
