Of good bodies and getting things
THE great Gage Almighty has immortalised in song the kind of woman who should “get things”, and she’s certainly not the dour, uninteresting type who doesn’t take care of herself. Similarly, Masicka gives 10 out of 10 to the same type of woman — the kind deserving of the acre of land with a big mansion.
So if we were to go by Dancehall culture, it’s the men’s obsession with beauty and physical assets that should drive women to adjust how they look to suit these purposes and see some kind of material gain. But then again, women will tell you that they do it all for themselves — the hair, nails, the kitty cleansing and other upgrades that enhance their physical beauty.
Which gender is more obsessed with the idea of physical beauty? Below some people share:
Spencer, aviation technician:
Men are definitely more obsessed with the idea of looks. They want their women to have the Instagram bodies, while women mostly just want a man with a good job, who looks decent. A man definitely wants someone who stands out, who has all the curves (natural or fake), so that when he goes on the road with her it’s all eyes on her so he can puff his chest and hold his head high.
Monique, 28, customer service agent:
I believe men are more obsessed with looks. The reason for this is that a man believes that having a woman who is beautiful is an indication of achievement on his part. He flaunts her and shows her off to his friends. He wants everyone to know that he has a gorgeous woman. A woman may look at perhaps what a man can do for her instead.
Theo, 39, actuarial scientist:
I would say that men are more obsessed than women are with looks. I think women see much deeper — some might be about what they gain materially, but most are concerned with a man they can build with, even if he is no Idris Elba (though even he is overrated)! They want a man who is willing to commit, who will be a man, and who will support them. For men, it is an ego thing and I am not afraid to say it because one time I only dated women that fit within my “fool-fool” ideal of beauty — you know browning, pretty hair, and those things. But now I don’t go for that anymore; I go for substance. But you still see the old boys all about the women with the Peruvian hair, Brazilian butt lift, and implants, because that’s the in-thing.

Women are more obsessed with how they look, but men are more obsessed with how their partners look. Men are known to be visual and so they will check out everything.

These days every man wants a walking trophy. Every man is trying to outdo the other, so it’s no wonder the women are doing so many things to outdo each other to impress the men with the biggest money bags.

I think that men are more obsessed with looks because they tend to gravitate towards a lot of physical features. Women have a lot to offer and men seem to have their own ideal of how they want their companions to look.
Quincy, 25, financial analyst:
I’d say the man. The woman is more concerned about how he treats her. Guys have egos and they love the idea of showing off — so a pretty girl definitely helps with that. I’ve never heard a woman say to another woman, “damn your man is pretty”, but I’ve always heard guys commenting on other men’s women’s features.
