Liquid chlorophyll: Good for gut health, and more

UNLESS you’ve been living under a rock you would have heard about liquid chlorophyll — influencers have been touting its benefits for clear skin, gut health, and as an overall health aide. But are there any merits to their claim?

Liquid chlorophyll, often derived from green plants, has been associated with several potential health benefits. Herbalist Kenute Harrison said it is believed to have antioxidant properties, aiding in neutralising free radicals and reducing oxidative stress in the body.

Liquid chlorophyll is a green pigment found in plants, responsible for photosynthesis — the process by which plants convert light into energy. It’s often extracted from the chloroplasts of plants, and its liquid form is commonly used as a dietary supplement. This supplement is derived from green, leafy vegetables, typically alfalfa, spinach or wheatgrass. The liquid form of chlorophyll is believed to be more easily absorbed by the body compared to chlorophyll in pill or capsule form.

It’s claimed to support blood health by potentially aiding in the production of haemoglobin and improving red blood cell function.

Some studies suggest anti-inflammatory properties, which could benefit conditions related to inflammation.

“Liquid chlorophyll is easily accessible for purchase online and in health food stores, and it’s sold as a natural supplement,” Harrison said. “But while these benefits are intriguing, it’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the extent of chlorophyll’s effects. As with any supplement, it’s advisable to consult with a health-care professional before incorporating it into your routine.”
