Good health with natural teas

BY ALAISHA THOMAS

GOOD health is literally growing in your backyard, and more and more people are turning to herbal medicine to help with their ailments. Herbalist Kenute Harrison said teas made from plant leaves have natural ingredients, and often contain various vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that can support overall health.

“Many cultures have used herbal remedies for centuries, passing down knowledge of their medicinal properties through generations,” he said. “Different herbs offer different health benefits such as immune support, improved digestion, reduced inflammation, and even potential anti-cancer properties. When used appropriately and in moderation, herbal teas typically have fewer side effects compared to pharmaceutical drugs. Also, herbal medicine often takes a holistic approach to health, aiming to address underlying imbalances in the body rather than just treating symptoms.”

He lists these popular plants below, and their various health benefits when made into tea.

Soursop leaves

These are known for their potential anti-cancer properties and immune-boosting effects. Soursop is rich in antioxidants, vitamin C and fibre, and aids digestion.

Guinea hen weed

This is used for its purported anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also has immune-boosting properties.

Neem leaves

Neem leaves are used for their antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. They are used in traditional medicine for various purposes, including skincare, oral health, and treating infections.

Cerasee

Also called bitter melon, cerasee leaves have the potential to regulate blood sugar levels, boost immunity, and aid in digestion. It’s also used traditionally as a detoxifier and to support liver health.

Moringa

High in antioxidants and vitamins, moringa leaves are known for their potential to reduce inflammation and lower cholesterol levels. Moringa leaves are a nutritional powerhouse, rich in vitamins and minerals, and antioxidants. They are particularly high in vitamin C, vitamin A, calcium, and iron. Moringa leaves support blood sugar regulation, and promote heart health; they are also used traditionally to boost energy and immunity. Incorporating moringa leaves into your diet can be a great way to enhance overall health and well-being.

Guava leaf

Guava leaves have several potential health benefits, including their ability to lower blood sugar levels, reduce bad cholesterol, aid in weight loss, and provide antimicrobial properties. They are also rich in antioxidants, which can help protect against cell damage and inflammation. Additionally, guava leaves have anti-inflammatory effects and promote digestive health.

Mulberry leaf

Mulberry leaves also offer numerous health benefits. They contain compounds that can help regulate blood sugar levels, making them beneficial for individuals with diabetes. Additionally, mulberry leaves have been linked to improved heart health due to their ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties and may aid in weight loss. Moreover, mulberry leaves are rich in antioxidants, which can protect cells from damage and support overall health.

“Before using any medicinal plant, it’s important to consult with a health-care professional — especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medications — to ensure it’s safe for you,“ Harrison said.
