Skin is in — for men

IN today’s world where self-care is trending and becoming a higher priority, men’s skincare often remains overlooked. However, men’s skin requires just as much care and attention as women’s.

Dr Kimberley Johnson, founder of Skyn By Dr Kym, a leading aesthetic and medical centre specialising in tailored skincare solutions, sheds light on this topic and offers practical advice for men looking to elevate their skincare routines.

A prevailing myth about skincare is that it’s exclusively for women. This stereotype often discourages men from adopting skincare routines due to concerns about appearing less masculine.

“There’s a common misconception that men who invest in skincare are considered more ‘feminine’,” says Dr Johnson. “In reality, skincare is essential for everyone, and the rough, rugged look that many men see as the norm is oftentimes not a sign of healthy skin.”

Skincare basics

Men, like women, have varying skin types: dry, oily, combination, or normal. To determine their type, Dr Johnson suggests this tip.

“Cleanse and leave the skin bare for 30-60 minutes. If it feels tight, you have dry skin. If it becomes oily, you have oily skin. Combination skin will show both dry and oily areas while unchanged skin suggests normal or resistant skin.”

Common concerns for men and suggested solutions

In recent years, several factors have contributed to a significant increase in men showing more interest in and seeking out skincare solutions. Teenagers entering high school are becoming more conscious of their acne, and overall appearance means that we find more young men adopting skincare routines at an earlier age. This heightened awareness among younger men is also reflected in their increased attention to issues like razor bumps. For men of all ages, dealing with razor bumps and ingrown hairs is a common challenge.

“Ingrown hairs are a major issue for men, particularly because of facial hair growth,” Dr Johnson explains. Proper shaving techniques and routine skincare are crucial for minimising irritation.

“Irritation is reduced by technique and a consistent routine, not by aftershave products,” she advises.

Dr Johnson recommends retinoids, aloe vera, and exfoliants such as glycolic and salicylic acids to aid in both soothing and smoothing the skin.

“Sunscreen and moisturiser are also key components of a solid skincare routine. It’s best to use mineral SPF 50 or higher for optimal protection,” she shares.

Trending topics

Skincare has also become a trending topic on popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. Content on these platforms has heightened awareness and driven men to stay updated with the latest trends. Today, many men are also influenced by their partners who are passionate about skincare and have encouraged them to start their own skincare journey. This external encouragement, coupled with increased personal interest, are in large part the reasons we are seeing more and more men seeking professional help in creating a skincare regimen and treating skin conditions.

So what should men do?

Every man should have a few key products in his skincare arsenal — cleanser, exfoliant, moisturiser, and sunscreen — and should use them in that order. Exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes a clearer complexion.

“Men should exfoliate twice a week with a product suited to their skin type. All in all, a structured routine maximises the benefits of each product and all work together for overall healthy appearance,” she shared.

For men who find moisturisers greasy, there are lightweight or oil-free options also available. And a general rule of thumb? Products with fragrance, essential oils, and denatured alcohols can cause irritation and lead to long-term skin damage, so these should be avoided altogether in order to support healthier, more balanced and resilient skin. Professional treatments like facials can also benefit men, with recommendations tailored to individual needs.

Lastly, healthy skin is a reflection of overall health.

“Skincare is not only topical. To improve your complexion, cut back on refined sugars and dairy, and make sure you stay active!” Dr Johnson says.

By following this expert advice and investing in skincare, men can address signs of ageing and maintain vibrant, healthy skin. Skincare is about both looking and feeling good so gentlemen, it’s time to embrace skincare!

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated — choose a simple routine consisting of cleanser, exfoliant, moisturiser, then sunscreen, and be consistent.
