Magran highlights grim reality of Jamaican prison system

Having addressed serious issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, singjay Magran focuses on the Jamaican penal system with Jail House, his latest song. The self-produced single was released on September 1 by his MG Records.

Jail House gives a grim scenario about life behind bars. He looks at some of the challenges inmates face including solitary confinement, inhumane sanitary and living conditions and sub-standard meals.

“I was inspired to write this song upon learning about these confinement institutions, the poor conditions, insufficient food to feed prisoners, unsanitary conditions of rest rooms and the list goes on,” said Magran. “My song and video not only highlights these atrocities but encourages others to stay out of trouble to prevent the experience others have been through.”

There have been concerns about conditions at Jamaica’s two maximum security prisons — the General Penitentiary in Central Kingston and St Catherine Adult District Adult Correctional Centre. In July 2025, inmates at the latter complained that they were denied visitation and recreation rights.

These claims were denied by administrators at the prison.

Born Richard Rose, Magran is heavily influenced by artistes such as Professor Nuts and General Degree, whose lighthearted lyrics were a foil to hardcore deejays like Ninjaman and Shabba Ranks.

Most of the songs Banbury, St Catherine-raised Magran has released since launching his recording career seven years ago, have been humorous. But he has weighed in on critical matters on songs like Stay Home, which addressed the COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020.
