Sasha’s ‘Dat Sexy Body’ powers Zara Larsson’s ‘So Good’ album to platinum status
In 2016, Swedish singer Zara Larsson released the song ‘I Would Like’, which features a sample and interpolations from Sasha’s 1998 single ‘Dat Sexy Body’.
‘I Would Like’ became Larsson’s biggest hit at the time, reaching number two on the UK Singles chart. The song is featured on the album So Good, which was certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) last Friday for streaming and sales equivalent exceeding 300,000 units.
Sasha (real name Karen Chin) turned to gospel music in 2008. Now known as Sista Sasha, she spoke to OBSERVER ONLINE about ‘Dat Sexy Body’ being embraced by a new generation of artistes.
“I feel honoured to know that my work is being recognised by so many international acts. I also feel motivated to continue to write songs that will reach far and wide, inspiring others,” she said.
Recorded on producer Tony Kelly’s Bookshelf rhythm, ‘Dat Sexy Body’ made the Billboard charts five years after its initial release. It reached number 78 on the R&B Hip Hop Songs Chart in 2003.
‘I Would Like’ was a global hit but failed to make the charts in America. It has been certified gold in Switzerland, Poland, New Zealand, Italy and Brazil, while earning platinum status in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Canada. In Australia, it has been certified 2x platinum.
On the charts, ‘I Would Like’ reached number one in Belgium, number seven in Ireland, number 16 in Australia, number 23 in Denmark, number four in Sweden and number three in Scotland.
The album So Good, released in March 2017 via Black Butter/Epic Records/Ten Records, has been certified platinum in the United States, Brazil and Canada, 6x platinum in Norway, and gold in Australia, Netherlands and New Zealand.
